ALL IS CALM, ALL IS BRIGHT: True Stories of Christmas - compiled by C. KIRKLING
Each story in this collection is filled with expressions of faith, acceptance, friendship and wondrous joys. Oft times, the stories reminded the reader of the quandary faced by single moms raising their children without the financial support from their ex-husbands. My favorite stories included "Silent Night" and "Full Circle".   Grade: A-

AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS - G.C. MENOTTI
Amahl is a dreamer and story teller. His mom often questions what Amahl tells her. Then one beautiful night, Amahl notices a peculiar star in the night sky. Later that night, three kings stop at Amahl's home to inquire about the birth of a new king. Amahl doesn't have an answer for the kings but he joins them on their quest. Grade: B+

AMISH CHRISTMAS - R. AMMON
Beautiful illustrations and a simple story tell the reader about Amish Christmas traditions and
joys. The book is informative and entertaining. Grade: B

AND ALL THROUGH THE HOUSE - ED McBAIN
It is Christmas Eve at the 87th precinct.  Hard-boiled detectives handle drug dealers and a robber.  Additionally, a pregnant woman and her boyfriend are arrested on squatting charges.  The woman is nearly due to deliver.  She does at the precinct.  Ed McBain's story didn't have much of a Christmas theme.  Grade: D
 
ANGEL DOLL - J. BLEDSOE
Using his hard earned money, a brother buys an expensive doll for his sick sister. That isn't all,
the brother also asks a seamstress to create an angel costume for this doll since his sister loves angels.  Through a brother's gift, the reader learns about Christmas love. Grade: B-

ANGELINA'S CHRISTMAS - K. HOLABIRD
Angelina has a role in her school's Christmas play. She really enjoys the holidays. Angelina
lives in a village where nearly everybody savors holiday cheer. But Mr. Bell seems morose and Angelina enlists her parents to bring the holidays to Mr. Bell. Angelina then learns that Mr. Bell has a Santa costume and that he used to play Santa Claus. Angelina convinces Mr. Bell to portray Santa in the school's play. Grade: C

ANGEL OF ELEVENTH AVENUE - R. BATES
Katherine Wilson's life is rapidly approaching its end and terminal pancreatic cancer is the culprit. Katherine has been involved with the Festival of Trees for many years and she wants to share a sacred personal experience with her friends from the festival. This experience involved Katherine's daughter who was diagnosed with leukemia as a child. While under medical care at Primary Children's Hospital, Katherine's daughter was comforted by an angel. This event changed Katherine's life of course. Grade: B

ANGEL PIG AND THE HIDDEN CHRISTMAS - J. WALDRON
"Tis the day before Christmas and the house is a-flutter. The pigs are abuzz cleaning up all the clutter." As the pigs get ready for Christmas, they realize that last years decoration are in tatters. But there is no money for new decorations. The pigs believe that Christmas is over. Then they are visited by Angel Pig who tells them that Christmas comes from the heart, not from a store. Yes, the pigs rediscover Christmas cheer and goodwill and the artwork by D. McPhail is entertaining. Grade: B-

ANGELS AND OTHER STRANGERS - KATHERINE PATERSON
None of the stories in this collection really touched my heart. The last story, about a pastor struggling with his Christmas sermon, did have more of a holiday theme. Grade: C

ANGEL TREE - H.C. PUTTNAM
Old man Cyrus McCafferty opens his home to all the neighborhood kids during the holidays.  The children help him decorate for Christmas.  Jake is one of the boys helping to decorate.  He particularly enjoys a crystal globe decoration.  M. McCafferty's Christmas tree usually is the best and first tree bought off the tree lot.  Then one year, Mr. McCafferty didn't buy his tree.  He had moved and Jake felt the loss of his friend.  Jake's dad buys a tree but it doesn't fit into the house.  Jake and his dad leave the tree outside.  During the night, Jake wakes up to hear angels singing and sees them decorating the tree.  In the morning, there is a package waiting for Jake.  The package contains the crystal globe which Jake liked.  Grade: C
 
ANNA'S CHRISTMAS WISH - W. JONES
Anna doesn't expect Santa Claus to visit her this year. Her mom has been sick for a long time and her dad lost his job because of all the time he took off to care for his wife. Where is God in this situation? Anna's father told her that prayers don't always get answered. But Anna sees the nativity at the church and says a prayer. Will her prayer be answered? Will Anna receive her Christmas wish? This simple story is a beautiful example of a child's unbiased faith. Grade: B+

ANNIKA'S SECRET WISH - B. LEWIS
This retelling of a Swedish Christmas tradition teaches the reader about caring for others. Every Christmas Eve, Annika's mom cooks rice pudding and adds one almond. Whoever finds the almond in their pudding will get their fondest wish. Annika earnestly hopes to find the almond because she desires to get a pony. She does find the almond but what does Annika do with her treasure?
Grade: B+

ARTHUR'S CHRISTMAS - M. BROWN
D.W. is extremely excited for Christmas and all the gifts she expects. Arthur is frustrated that he hasn't found a gift for Santa Claus. Arthur has noticed that Santa always seems to be eating. Both D.W. and Arthur arrive at a solution to their quests. Grade: B-

ARTHUR'S PERFECT CHRISTMAS - M. BROWN
Arthur and his friends all have different ideas of what makes Christmas perfect. They learn that Christmas can be perfect without actually being perfect. Grade: B-

AT THE MANGER: The Stories of Those Who Were There - P. ORULLIAN
Peter Orullian presents the sacred Christmas story with a new twist. The reader follows several different characters; including an out-of-work carpenter, a midwife and a beggar woman; as they discover the Holy Child. Every time, the divinity of Christmas is affirmed.   Grade: B+

AUNTIE CLAUS - E. PRIMAVERA
Sophia Kringle is enthralled by her great-aunt Auntie Claus. Sophia loves all the gifts she receives at Christmas but she misses Auntie Claus because Auntie misses every Christmas for business reasons. Well, Sophia's curiosity gets the better of her and she hides out in Auntie's luggage just before Auntie Claus leaves on her latest business trip. The reader will be surprised by Sophia's adventure. Grade: B

BABY SANTA'S CHRISTMAS JOY - J. AIGNER-CLARK
This children's book filled with holiday photographs includes a Christmas music CD. The
yuletide sights and sounds will entertain your children. Grade: C+

BARNEY'S FAVORITE CHRISTMAS STORIES - S. WHITE & M. BERNTHAL
Barney, Baby Bop, BJ and friends present four holiday stories. Each story describes a benefit or moral of the yuletide season. For example, giving is better than receiving. Barney fans will enjoy these stories and parents won't suffer too much reading them aloud. Grade: C+

BEAR NOEL - O. DUNREA
Bear Noel brings Christmas gifts to the animals of the north woods on Christmas Eve. All the animals, even enemies such as the hare and the wolf, unite on this evening to celebrate. Grade: C-

BEAR'S CHRISTMAS GIFT- E. WINTHROP
Nora takes good care of her teddy bear.  When Nora goes shopping, she asks Mrs. Duck to watch and play with Bear.  Mrs. Duck and Bear play hide and seek.  Bear accidentally finds the wrapped Christmas gifts.  He shakes them and is disappointed that not one of them feels like the gift he wished for.  Bear and Mrs. Duck draw pictures of their Christmas wishes.  Will they receive their wished for gifts?  This story didn't give me much of a Christmas feeling.  Grade: C-
 
BENJAMIN'S GIFT - C. CALLAWAY
Being crippled makes life challenging no matter when or where you live. Benjamin was born with only stubs for legs but he has accepted his lot in life. Then a few years ago, Benjamin's parents were killed. Now he and his brother Lancus support themselves. Lancus fights in Herod's army and Benjamin sells his wood carvings. The fates smile upon Benjamin when a friend of the family carves wooden legs for Benjamin; then Lancus is killed in battle. How will Benjamin continue living? Benjamin hears about the birth of the Christ child but he has no gift to give. Or does he?
Callaway's book teaches about love, friendship and sacrifice in a short and potent novel. Grade: A-
 
BEST CHRISTMAS HUNT EVER - J. SPEIRS
This children's book, a variation on picture search popularized by the I Spy books, will keep your young ones busily searching for various Christmas items. Unfortunately there was no Christmas message. Grade: C-

BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER - B. ROBINSON
The Herdman kids are terrors and everybody dreads their participation in the Christmas pageant. This year, nobody will ever forget the pageant and its unusual ending. Grade:A-

BEST-LOVED CHRISTMAS STORIES OF THE LDS PEOPLE - EDITED
This collection of Christmas stories is filled with classical holiday tales and true Christmas anecdotes. Several general authorities also have writings in this superb compilation. Grade: A

BIRD'S CHRISTMAS CAROL - K. WIGGIN
After three boys, the first and only girl is born into the Bird home on Christmas morning. In honor of the holiday, this beautiful girl is named Carol. Little Carol is a smart and endearing child. Unfortunately, her little body is sick and after age five, Carol tires easily and has to stay mostly in bed. Her bedroom becomes far more than just a room. Carol's parents, and the house staff, bring the joys of the world to Carol's sanctuary. Sweet Carol shares her many books with the sick children at the Children's Hospital. For Christmas, Carol has a special treat planned for the children living in the humble home behind her. Carol teaches her family, and the reader, that Christmas is more about caring and giving than receiving. Children and adults will like this story which is set in the late 1800's.   Grade: B+

BOB AND SIX MORE CHRISTMAS STORIES - S. BOYNTON
Boynton's cute drawings and silly verse will be fun for your children. Grade: B-

BOOK OF CHRISTMAS WISDOM - C. FREEMAN
"Let us pray that we shall be able to welcome Jesus at Christmas - not in the cold manger of our heart, but in a heart full of love and humanity!" (Mother Teresa)
Freeman divides the nuggets of Christmas wisdom into many categories but the above comment by Mother Teresa sums up the content of Freeman's book. Grade: B

BRIDGE - L. BARKDULL
Abigail Luce is the director of the Spring Hill Orphanage and Emmett is one of the orphans living there. Sadie Barringer is getting old and likes to visit her childhood town, now a ghost town, Bethlehem. During the Civil War, Bethlehem played a pivotal part in a minor skirmish. But there is a lot of history buried in Bethlehem. Emmett's parentage lies in the secrets. Barkdull's book teaches about forgiveness. Grade: B-

CERTAIN POOR SHEPHERDS - E.M. THOMAS
This is a book for animal lovers. A dog and a goat take care of a herd of sheep. They follow the Star to Bethlehem, but the special child is just barely mentioned. Angels did appear, but there isn't much of a Christmas message here. Grade: F

CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS - C. SCHULTZ
Charlie Brown doesn't understand Christmas. He says: "I feel let down." Seeking help from Lucy does not increase Charlie's understanding. But Linus, Lucy and the gang have a surprise in store for Charlie. Schultz's tale offers the Christmas spirit.  Grade: B

CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL CHRISTMAS TREASURY - EDITED
Heartwarming stories proclaim the spirit of Christmas. This collection will be a nice addition to any family's library. Grade: A-

CHILD IS BORN - M. BROWN
The author of Goodnight Moon uses her literary talents to retell the story of Christs birth. F. Coopers paintings portray the story. Grade: C+

CHILD'S CHRISTMAS AT ST. NICHOLAS CIRCLE - T. KINKADE
Christmas Eve 1918 is a snowy day in St. Nicholas Circle. The train station master receives a partial telegraph message alerting the town about the visit of a special guest. Everybody prepares for the mysterious visitor and St. Nicholas Circle enjoys a resurgence of the Christmas spirit. Kinkade's incomparable paintings add to the message of this book which is remembering the least among all. Grade: A-

CHILD'S CHRISTMAS IN WALES - D. THOMAS
The title says it all but the book also serves as a reminder of our past Christmases.  Grade: C
 
CHRISTMAS ABUNDANCE - C. PAULL
Christmas abundance is about slowing down and savoring the sweetness of this wonderful season. Candy Paull shares many Christmas traditions and uplifting stories with the reader. She even shares some of her family's favorite holiday recipes. C. Paull reminds the reader to enjoy the beauty of every moment of life. Grade: B

CHRISTMAS AFTER ALL: The Great Depression Diary of Minnie Swift - K. LASKY
This is the first book of the Dear America series that I have read and I was suitably impressed. Minnie's diary is peppered with historical expressions and facts. Christmas during the Depression in Indianapolis isn't perfect. The Swift family is better off than the many vagrants living in the shanty town, but money is still limited. Yet, the Swifts take cookies to these poor and sing carols to them. Minnie and her siblings use their imagination to create Christmas gifts. The family members also enjoy listening to popular radio programs such as The Shadow and Buck Rogers.
The Christmas spirit still exists even during economic troubles. Grade: B+

CHRISTMAS ANGEL - P. VAINIO
Maria and her mother are out shopping a few days before Christmas.  While Maria looks at some toys in a store window, she sees the reflection of a haggard and unkempt man.  The look of the man scares Maria and she runs to find her mom.  That evening, Maria and her grandma bake cookies and unpack the Christmas decorations.  Among these trinkets is a music box with an angel.  But the angel doesn't have any wings.  Grandma explains that angels have to earn their wings and that people can do a good deed to help the angels.  The next day, Maria and her grandma see the same homeless man in the park.  That night, Maria takes all the angel-shaped cookies and wraps them up.  In the morning, she takes her package to the man in the park.  When Maria opens her gifts on Christmas morning, she finds that the music box anfel has received his wings.  This was a cute story.  It should appeal to younger children.  Grade: C
 
CHRISTMAS ARK- R.D. SAN SOUCI
Elizabeth and Sarah Branscombe are traveling with their mom by ship from Maine to California to meet up with their Dad. It is Christmas Eve and the ship is fogbound. The girls are worried that they will miss spending Christmas Day with their Dad in San Francisco. That night, both girls are awakened by a strange light caused by a flying ark. St. Nicholas is the captain of this ark and he invites the girls to join him in delivering the Christmas gifts worldwide. As a reward, both girls may choose what type of Christmas would be perfect for them. Sarah and Elizabeth are in awe as they traverse the globe and see the delightful sights of exotic locales such as Hawaii, Australia and Europe. The Christmas Ark finally arrives in California and the girls see their Dad as he is waiting for them. They see their gifts and realize that their perfect Christmas consists of spending the holiday with their parents. In a few words, San Souci teaches the reader that choices always exist but that family traditions are more important. Grade: B-

CHRISTMAS AT THE M&M - M. BROWN
It's Christmas 1944 and Patrick Wallace plays a cello in the school orchestra. One day, Patrick stayed too late practicing and missed the bus. Walking home in the snow,carrying his heavy cello, Patrick is offered a ride by a stranger. Although he has misgivings, Patrick accepts the ride. This ride leads to a Christmas which Patrick will never forget. Christmas At The M&M is a beautiful story which teaches the meaning of Christmas and lauds the exalted holiday. Grade: A-

CHRISTMAS BEAR - H. STICKLAND
An inquisitive polar bear cub finds an intriguing hole, investigates and falls in.  The little cub lands in Santa's study.  Santa Claus invites his furry guest to tour the workshop and other underground areas at the North Pole.  The cub enjoys seeing the toy testing are and the gift wrapping room.  Finally, Santa takes the cub home.  I really enjoyed the illustrations by Stickland.  Every picture provides a myriad of visual treasures.  Grade: B+
 
CHRISTMAS BOX - R. P. EVANS
A young family moves in with a widow into her Avenues home in Salt Lake City. It is the
Christmas season and the father has started a new business which takes him away from home much of the time. His daughter befriends the old lady, Mary Anne Parkin, and learns that "No place is better than home but sometimes we forget." Mrs. Parkin has a Christmas box in which she keeps several personal letters. She also has a favorite Bible with pages stained by her tears. And every December, Mrs. Parkin visits a particular grave. I could tell you more about this wonderful book but I won't. Christmas Box touches the readers heart. I love this book. Grade: A

CHRISTMAS BOX MIRACLE - R.P. EVANS
Richard Evans shares his life's reflections in his latest book. He recounts his mission in Taiwan, his business adventures and even his political aspirations. Evans' book is a personal affirmation of hope, faith, triumphs and the belief in God. I quite enjoyed his adventures in publishing.
Grade: B+

CHRISTMAS CANDLE - R.P. EVANS
Thomas is on his way home on a foggy night when the candle in his lantern burns out. He finds a candlemaker's store and buys a candle for his lantern. Thomas berates the shopkeeper for creating works of art out of wax which will melt as the candles burn down. But the shopkeeper just ignores Thomas' comments. Instead, the kindly old man gives Thomas a special candle. The new candle provides illumination in more ways than one. Thomas encounters what he believes to be various members of his family but then realizes that these people aren't his relatives. The candle lifts the darkness from Thomas heart. Grade: A-

CHRISTMAS CAROL - CHARLES DICKENS
READ ALL ABOUT IT!! HARDHEARTED SCROOGE MEETS GHOSTS!!!
I love this Dickens classic. This wonderful Christmas story gains more meaning for me every time that I read it. Grade: A+

CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR - V. HOWARD
"Joy is not in things, it is in us!" says Benjamin Franklin. And this is just one of the reflective thoughts in this collection. Coupled with old time illustrations and recipes, this book makes a fine addition to your yuletide library. Grade: B

CHRISTMAS CONVERSATION PIECE - B. NICHOLAUS and P. LOWRIE
Have you ever been to a party at which you were tongue-tied and without any conversational topic? Well, now you can surprise guests by starting the conversation with any of the questions in this book. Among my favorite questions were #87 How many words can you derive from the word Christmas? and #241 What is the most creative way you can think of to present an engagement ring during the holidays? Grade: B

CHRISTMAS CROCODILE - B. BECKER
Alice finds an extraordinary gift in her home on Christmas Eve, a crocodile. The friendly
crocodile just wants to be good but it is ravenous and eats the Christmas decorations. Alice and her family don't know what to do with this reptile. This silly book may lack a Christmas message but it will make kids laugh. Grade: C-

CHRISTMAS DOLL - E. WOODRUFF
Lucy and Glory Wolcott are orphans who toil from morning until night in a London workhouse. The nights are damp and cold and the sisters are served meager meals. But Lucy tells wonderful stories and helps herself and Glory mentally escape the horrors of their plight. When fever and sickness travel through the workhouse, Lucy and Glory run away to save themselves. But London at the turn of the century is no place for street urchins. How will the Wolcott sisters survive the bitter cold and lack of food? Lucy finds employment and eventually a kind stranger comes to the aid of the sisters. Grade: B-

CHRISTMAS FILLED WITH MIRACLES - M. ELLEN
Mary Ellen asks the reader: "Have you noticed that when people are kind, miracles happen?"  She then proceeds to share many stories of Christmas miracles with the reader.  Mary Ellen hopes that these stories will encourage the reader to be charitable to others.   Grade: B
 
CHRISTMAS FOUND - D.J. NIELSEN
Joshua McMillan has no family.  During the holidays, Joshua cuts Christmas trees to sell to the folks in town.  As he cuts down the trees, he imagines which family might like which tree.  On his way out of town, Joshua stops to fill his water canteen and overhears a couple of small girls talking about their sick dad and that they might not have much of a Christmas.  Without being aware of the fact immediately, Joshua hiers the girls' dad to be Christmas help.  Joshua decides to help this family.  He has teh perfect tree hidden away and he buys various gifts for the children and their mother.  This allows Joshua to really enjoy the holiday spirit.  Grade: C
 
CHRISTMAS GIFT - E.A. McMully
This wordless picture book depicts a mouse family preparing for the Christmas holiday.  On Christmas morning, the mouse children blissfully unwrap their gifts.  One child especially enjoys his electric airplane.  He even takes his gift with him to visit the grandparents.  The airplane is broken accidentally, but grandpa mouse saves the day.  McMully reminds all of us of the importance of being together as families on this holiday.  Grade: C
 
CHRISTMAS GIFT (El Regalo de Navidad) - F. JIMENEZ
This bilingual Christmas story tells the reader about Panchito and his family.  They are migrant workers and work is tough to find.  Panchito wishes for a real ball for Christmas.  Instead, he receives the same simple gift as his siblings.  This gift is given with love and the children do appreciate their parents' sacrifice.  This true story reminds the readers to be grateful for everything they receive.  Grade: B
 
CHRISTMAS IN MY HEART Vol. 10 - edited by J. WHEELER
This latest compilation by J. Wheeler is a sentimental and heartwarming collection of Christmas stories. My favorites include "Lights of the Season", about a crotchety old coot next door, and "Johnny Christmas", about an orphaned girl hoping to be adopted. This timeless handsome book will make a nice addition to anybodys library. Grade: A-

CHRISTMAS IN MY SOUL - edited by J. WHEELER
J. Wheeler found several touching Christmas stories for this compilation. My favorite was "With a Star On Top." Grade: B+

CHRISTMAS IN PLAINS - J. CARTER
Throughout his life, Jimmy Carter would return to his home in Plains for the holidays as often as he could. His childhood allowed him to bask in the yuletide traditions of his family. Former President Carter shares with his readers the importance of family and the importance of observing Christmas. Grade: B

CHRISTMAS LETTERS - B. NICHOLAS
Christmas is for families and Grandpa loves having all his children in his home. This year he has prepared a special letter for each member of the family. These letters teach the true meaning of Christmas. Grade: B+

CHRISTMAS LETTERS - L. SMITH
You've all received them, the year-end review Christmas letters. This book contains several letters like that. But Christmas books should have a Christmas message and be uplifting, this book is not. Grade: F

CHRISTMAS MELODY - A. STANSFIELD
For Melody Morgan, Christmas and all other holidays are just regular days. Her family didn't celebrate special occasions; her father was abusive. Now Melody is on her own and she doesn't want to interact with her dysfunctional family. Melody also isn't looking for love when she bumps into Matthew Trevor. What will this Christmas season hold for Melody? This was the best of the three Christmas books that I have read by A. Stansfield. She tackles some tough subjects but keeps the reader interested in the story. Grade: B

CHRISTMAS MAGIC - M. GARLAND
Garland's splendid paintings tell the fun story of Emily who loves Christmas. This year, Emily feels that Christmas Eve will be more exciting than other years. And she isn't wrong. The Christmas decorations come to life and Emily's snow woman turns into a beautiful dancer. This is a fun and entertaining story. Grade: C+

CHRISTMAS MEMORY. - T. CAPOTE
This collection of possibly autobiographical stories is set in Alabama during the great depression. We, as the readers, are reminded of our past Christmases and the joys to be garnered from Christmas. Grade: B

CHRISTMAS MIRACLE OF JONATHAN TOOMEY - S. WOJCIECHOWSKI
The woodcarver has been a widower for too many years but the emotional pain still hinders him. This Christmas, a widow and her son ask the woodcarver to carve a new nativity set for them. From this act, the Christmas spirit rekindles in the woodcarver's life. Grade: B+

CHRISTMAS MIRACLES - compiled by B. & S. STEIGER
This is a nice collection of heartwarming stories about miraculous events happening during the holidays. The stories are faith promoting and my favorite is about a thirteen-year-old wise man. Grade: A

CHRISTMAS OF THE CHERRY SNOW - R.M. SIDDOWAY
Robert, age twelve, and his sister anxiously await Santa's arrival on Christmas Eve 1951. But they won't be opening their presents on Christmas morning. While trying to fix a leaky roof, Robert's parents fall off and get hurt. In fact, Robert's dad remains in a coma. Family friends assist Robert, his mom and his sister as much as possible; their fruit orchards require much upkeep. Christmas of the Cherry Snow reminds the reader to cherish friends and be willing to accept help. Grade: B

CHRISTMAS PATH: The Legend of the Luminarias - S. WRIGHT
Joseph and Mary arrive at the full inn and are directed to the stable instead. The innkeeper lends them his lantern and some blankets. Later in the evening, Mary gives birth. The innkeeper is awakened during the night by shepherds looking for a newborn child. He lends them a lantern and directs them to the stable. When the three kings arrive to honor the child, the innkeeper again lends a lantern to light the way to the stable. Eventually, the innkeeper wakes his family. Together they place lanterns along the path to the stable to light the way. Now when you see lit paths during the holidays you will know the tradition. Grade: C

CHRISTMAS RAT - AVI
What are the worst vermin in a city? Rats of course are the worst vermin. It is the Christmas
season and a new exterminator has come to Eric's building to clean up. Eric likes Anje, the
exterminator, and learns about the hazzards rats pose. While retrieving the familys Christmas
decorations from the basement storage, Eric encounters a rat. He is scared and now wants to kill the rat with Anje's help. But eventually Eric changes his mind about the rat since New York is experiencing an extreme cold spell and the rat is only seeking shelter. Will Anje succeed in exterminating this rat? What will Eric do? This was the first novel that I have read by Avi. His style is a bit different but I will read him again. Grade: C

CHRISTMAS SEARCH - S. WHITING
The Great Depression didn't just ruin America's economy and bring destitution to thousands of
families. It also caused thousands of children to leave home to ease their parents financial difficulties. Many children are also orphaned including Johnny and Joey who live in a Hooverville. Joey is very sick. He and his brother want to find the spirit of Christmas, even without parents and gifts. Christmas Search is a delightful, heartwarming and touching book. Brotherly love and the kindness of strangers are the main themes. Grade: A

CHRISTMAS SHIP - D. MORRISSEY
Sam Thatcher is the village toy maker. It is Christmas Eve and Sam has closed his shop when
Father Christmas visits him. Father Christmas is running behind schedule and asks Sam to deliver all the gifts in the village. Father Christmas sprinkles some magic around which allows many toys to come to life and help Sam with his deliveries. Sam uses a flying ship to traverse the village. I really liked the illustrations of this cute story. Grade: C+

CHRISTMAS SHOES - D. VANLIERE
Christmas Shoes will touch your heart. All the characters are ordinary people. Nathan, age
eight, is a precious second grader whose mom is dying of ovarian cancer. Robert Layton is a successful attorney. But success came at a steep price. Robert's wife wants a divorce; she feels that Robert no longer is a good father or husband. He has lost his love for his family. However, it is Christmas 1985 and the fates may yet be kind to Robert and Nathan. I feel that Christmas Shoes may become a holiday favorite. Grade: A-

CHRISTMAS SONATA - G. PAULSEN
A young boy learns about the true meaning of Christmas when he and his mom visit relatives for
the holiday. His cousin is sick and may not live much longer. Together these two boys discover the Christmas spirit for themselves. Grade: C

Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and LL Cool J are among the contributors to this collection
of mostly secular and personal holiday stories. Grade: C-

It is Christmas during the Great depression. A little girl looks forward to receiving a warm pair
of mittens off the mitten tree at the church. However, the tree has been stolen. Will there be no
Christmas for this congregation? Grade: C

CHRISTMAS STORIES: Keepsake Collection - EDITED
This collection of favorite Christmas stories and carols is presented in an oversized book. Every
home deserves to own a nice compilation of Christmas stories and this book serves this purpose.
Grade: B

CHRISTMAS STORY - taken from the Holy Scriptures
Detailed photos of the elaborate 18th century Neapolitan creche, housed in the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in New York, depict the birth of the Holy Child. Scriptural verses tell the story. This small handsome volume could become a family heirloom. Grade: B+

CHRISTMAS SURPRISE - A. WOOD
Mr. and Mrs. Piggletoe and their piglets experience the joys of Christmas. Children may find
this story entertaining, I didn't. Grade: C-

CHRISTMAS THIEF - C.L. PEARSON
The Evans family is missing their heirloom nativity set and only one kid in their neighborhood,
Brian Baumgartner, could be the thief. With Christmas Thief, C.L. Pearson teaches us about love and turning the other cheek. Grade: C+

CHRISTMAS TREASURY - compiled by M. DANIEL
This is a pleasant collection of Christmas poems and songs. Daniel also includes stories relating
the origin of some of the Christmas traditions. Grade: B

CHRISTMAS TREASURY: The Childrens Classic Edition - EDITED
This oversized and nicely illustrated book collects many favorite Christmas stories. The words to
many favorite Christmas carols are also included. Grade: B

CHRISTMAS TREASURY - edited by SCHOLASTIC
The editors of Scholastic Books have collected a few of the classic Christmas stories including
excerpts from Miracle on 34th Street and Best Christmas Pageant Ever. This collection appears to be directed mostly at teenage readers. Grade: B+

CHRISTMAS TREE - J. SALAMON
An orphaned girl joins a convent. As a nun, she raises a sapling to become a magnificent tree.
She donates this tree to the Rockefeller Center as their Christmas tree. Grade: C-

CHRISTMAS TROLLS - J. BRETT
Treva loves Christmas. However, this year strange things are happening. Christmas gifts and
ornaments are disappearing. Finally Treva notices a hedgehog grabbing Christmas stuff and taking it to a pair of trolls. The trolls fight over every single item. Treva teaches them about sharing and about Christmas. I enjoy Brett's illustrations. Grade: C+

CHRISTMAS WISH - J. GRIBBIN HUTCHINSON
David Connors lost his dad on Christmas morning. Christmas also died in David's mind that
morning. But as David faces difficult times in his life, he is visited by the ghost of his dad. David
doesn't tell anybody about his spectral rapport with his dad and David's dad shares distinct insights about life and the holidays with David. Grade: B

CHRISTMAS WISH - R.M. SIDDOWAY
William was raised by his grandparents after his parents were killed in an auto accident during the
holidays. Now, many years later, William is an adult and his grandfather has just died. Its Christmas and William's grandmother only has one wish. She wants William to find the woman mentioned in his grandfather's journals. Christmas Wish presents a wonderful tale of love and forgiveness. Grade: A

CLIFFORD'S CHRISTMAS - N. BRIDEWELL
Clifford's Christmas time adventures include meeting Santa Claus. This simple book is good for
beginning readers but doesn't have much of a holiday message. Grade: C-

COOL CHRISTMAS CHEER - BUBBLEGUM
Bubblegum is a children's character who gives Christmas advice. This silly book may possibly
appeal to some readers, maybe. Grade: D

CORDUROY'S CHRISTMAS - D. FREEMAN
This brightly colored lift-a-flap picture book tells about Corduroy's adventures as he gets ready
for Christmas. The youngest kids in your family will enjoy this book. Grade: C

COSMIC CHRISTMAS - M. LUCADO
Our divine Father and wretched Lucifer are two eternal beings: One able to rescue, the other
anxious to condemn. The Father is ready to continue his salvation of the human race by sending His Son to Earth as a little baby. Lucifer and his minions will stop at nothing to destroy the Son.
However, Gabriel and legions of angels praise Divinity as they protect the Holy Baby. Cosmic Christmas is a pleasant retelling of that sacred night in Bethlehem. Grade: B

COUNTING DOWN TO CHRISTMAS - N. TAFURI
A little girl counts down the days to Christmas as she fills her days with holiday activities.  She bakes cookies, makes greeting cards, wraps gifts, etc.  Finally it is Christmas day and she enjoys the holiday.  Simple illustrations and bright rich colors make this book attractive to young children.  Grade: C
 
COWBOY CHRISTMAS: The Miracle at Lone Pine Ridge - A. WOOD
Evan's father is dead. Evan and his mom Della still keep their ranch below Pine Ridge. They do
have Cully, a friend of Evan's father, to help them with the ranch. One Christmas Eve, Cully is late in returning to the ranch. Evan feels that something is wrong and he feels guided to look for Cully on Pine Ridge. Della and Evan rescue Cully and nurse him back to health. Life on the ranch will never be the same. The reader is taught about compassion and to be open to feelings. Miracles do still occur.  Grade: C+

CRACKED WHEAT FOR CHRISTMAS - T. HINDMARSH
For many people, financial success is all that matters. Alexander Pennington III is one of these
people. He is a research doctor and has finally become financially successful. He flaunts his riches in buying expensive gifts for his family and drives a new overpriced luxury car. Alex's car breaks down along a lone stretch of freeway and a severe snowstorm closes the freeway. The proud and self-serving Alex does find refuge with a sick mom and her children in the familys lonely cabin. This humble family teaches Alex about the spirit of Christmas and helps him discover his heart. Grade: B+

CRIPPLED LAMB - M. LUCADO
Joshua the lamb has one bad leg. When the shepherds move the herd to better pastures, Joshua
returns to his stable. He doesn't notice the bright star but soon realizes that humans are spending time in his stable. By being different, Joshua is one of the first animals to greet the newborn king. Children and adults will learn that God has a place for all of us. Grade: C

CUP OF CHRISTMAS TEA - T. HEGG
In just a few words, Hegg reminds the reader to visit relatives during the holidays and enjoy the
comfortable spirit of family. Our own families are often a refuge and the holiday season is the perfect time of the year to visit your family. Grade: C+

DANNY'S CORNER - N. WARNER
When mom and dad separate, the children always suffer. Danny's parents have gone their
separate ways. Dad lives in Los Angeles and mom lives in Chicago. It's Christmas time and Danny is on a direct flight back to Chicago. Danny's seat mate is Pete Sampson, CEO of Sampson Department Stores. Pete and the head flight attendant Gina both recognize a special spirit in Danny. All is well until mechanical problems cause the flight to divert to Salt Lake City. What happens next makes this book one of the best Christmas books that I have read. Danny's Corner is a splendid and warm Christmas book. Grade: A

DISNEY CHRISTMAS STORIES - DISNEY
All your favorite Disney characters are represented in this collection of Christmas stories. My
favorite is still Mickey's Christmas Carol. Grade: C+

DOLL'S CHRISTMAS - T. TUDOR
Laura and Efner are two girls who love to play with their dolls, Sethany Ann and Nicey Melinda.  The dolls live in a doll house called Pumpkin House.  On Christmas day, the dolls invite their friends for an elegant dinner and a marionette show.  Of course, as the dolls visit with their friends, so also do the children playing with the dolls visit with their respective friends.  Tasha Tudor teaches about the comradery of Christmas, but I wasn't too impressed with this story.  Grade: C-
 
DON'T BITE ME, I'M SANTA CLAUS - T. PLUMMER
Tom Plummer has played Santa Claus throughout the years. He reveals many of his experiences
in this book. Additionally, he recounts some of the letters which have been left for Santa Claus.
Grade: B-

DON'T FORGET THE STAR - G. DURRANT
Tinker Toys and more Tinker Toys were Durrant's usual childhood Christmas gifts. He
remembered his wish lists but accepted his disappointments. Durrant also writes about his first
experience under the mistletoe and how he coped with teenage angst. His memories of Christmases during his mission are especially touching. Durrant remembers his fathers counsel to follow the star. Grade: B+

DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE? - S.G. EVANS
Bun-Bun the rabbit, Happy the red bird, Baa-Baa the sheep and a snowman follow the bright
light until they find the holy baby's manger. Cuddly illustrations will allow the youngest members of your family to enjoy the Christmas story. Grade: B-

DREAM SNOW - E. CARLE
A farmer has five animals which he names 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. There is also a tree next to the barn.
The farmer names the tree tree. At the end of his long day, the exhausted farmer falls asleep and
dreams about falling snow. He wakes up. It has snowed. He then goes out to decorate the tree and to place the animals gifts under the tree. This wasn't much of a Christmas story in my opinion.
Grade: D

DUMPY SAVES CHRISTMAS - J. EDWARDS & E. HAMILTON
Charlie and his truck Dumpy help Santa Claus deliver the gifts when Santa's sleigh breaks down.
Charlie enjoys the first hand geography lesson and children learn about solving problems.
Grade: C+

ELF FOR CHRISTMAS - M. GARLAND
Christmas Eve in Santa's toy factory is very busy and Tingle, one of the elves, is so exhausted
that he falls asleep in one of the toy airplanes. Tingle wakes up on Christmas morning in a human
home. He flies the toy airplane up the chimney and escapes. Will Tingle safely return to the North Pole? This was a cute story with fun illustrations. Grade: C

ELOISE AT CHRISTMASTIME - K. THOMPSON
It's Christmas and Eloise is running loose in the Plaza Hotel. I don't know how the hotel staff
ever endure her antics. She wears a mistletoe halo and wishes everybody a Merry Christmas. Eloise even sings carols to the hotel guests. Yes, Eloise is a nuisance, but she is such a loveable nuisance.  Grade: C+

EVERYTHING CHRISTMAS STORIES MINI BOOK - EDITED
This book will make a great stocking stuffer. Though small in size, it presents classic Christmas
stories including "Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus" and Mark Twain's "Letter From Santa Claus."  Grade: B

FIRST GIFT OF CHRISTMAS - R.P. EVANS
This short collection of thoughts takes just a few minutes to read. Afterwards, the reader may
spend hours in introspective pondering. Grade : B

FIRST MIRACLE - J. ARCHER
It is the 43rd year of Caesar's reign and Bethlehem is teeming with citizens reporting for the
census. The 13-year-old son of the Roman governor has been sent to Bethlehem on an errand for his mom. While in Bethlehem, this boy encounters a couple of weary travelers, a man and his pregnant wife. This couple can't find lodging except in a stable. The Roman boy doesn't know why, but he gives his purchased fruits to this couple. This boy then returns home late, without the purchased goods, and accepts his father's wrath and punishment. Of course, there is always a twist at the end of any Archer story. Grade: A-

FOLLOW THAT STAR - E. BAUM
Christmas pageants are fun especially when live animals are used. Star is Davy's pet lamb but she
gets spooked by the children participating in the pageant. Star runs away, Davy and the other children chase her. More townsfolk join the chase and everybody is following that Star. This is an appealing story for the holidays. Grade: B

FORGOTTEN CAROLS - M. McLEAN
Constance, not Connie, Chamberlain is the perfect no-nonsense nurse. She follows instructions
explicitly and likes the order of her work. Constance is willing to spend her holidays providing in-home care for an older gentleman. Christmas and other holidays hold little meaning for her. But Uncle John, the slightly delusional old man, loves Christmas. He knows several new hymns which portray the Christmas story. Constance of course has a change of heart. Grade: B-

FORGOTTEN HELPER - LORRIE MOORE
Aben is a prime mischief maker and he is Santa's best toymaker. Since Aben constantly causes
trouble, Santa assigns Aben to watch the reindeer at every stop. But at the last house, the home of an impish little girl, Aben follows Santa and the other elves down the chimney. Aben gets distracted and doesn't make it back on the sled by the time Santa leaves. Now Aben must wait for the next Christmas. During the year, Aben tries to influence the naughty girl to become good so that Santa will stop at her house. This was a cute story. Grade: C+

FRANKLIN'S CHRISTMAS GIFT - P. BOURGEOIS
Franklin's school mates participate in a toy drive every Christmas. Each student may provide a
new or slightly used toy. As he chooses a toy, Franklin realizes that selfishness can't figure into his decision. Grade: B+

FROGGY'S BEST CHRISTMAS - J. LONDON
Froggy is hibernating but his friend Beaver wakes him up to celebrate Christmas. This is Froggy's first Christmas. He and Beaver wake up other friends to help them enjoy the holiday. This
book helps the reader rediscover the joys of Christmas. Grade: B-

GATHERING CHRISTMAS / EVERGREEN MIRACLES - L.&L. LAYCOCK
GC and EM both take place in SLC and surrounding area. In GC, an older couple enjoys the
holidays by gathering memories. You will love the beggar woman knocking on student housing
apartment doors. EM is a follow-up. It even involves students at the school with no name. I've
enjoyed these two books as much as the Christmas Box. Grade: A+/A

GIFT FROM SAINT NICHOLAS - D. LACHNER
The small village is snowed in. Our friendly postman can't deliver the mail and relatives can't even visit other relatives in the village. Two children wish that Saint Nicholas would do something
about this situation. Saint Nicholas does solve the problem but not in the way expected by the children. This delightful and short children's book depicts human nature at its best. Grade: A-

GIFT FROM ST. NICHOLAS - C. BOLLEY
Lavish illustrations accompany this brief history, written as a letter, of St. Nicholas. The letter
also teaches the reader about the greatest gift of Christmas. Grade: B+

GINGERBREAD BABY - J. BRETT
Jan Brett's beautiful illustrations, including depictions of the Swiss canton shields, tell this fun
story about the gingerbread baby that runs away while gleefully yelling: "If you want me, catch me if you can." While everybody chases after the gingerbread baby, additional activities are told in the borders. Who will capture baby? Although this isn't strictly a Christmas story, it does have holiday appeal. Grade: B

GLAD TIDINGS: A Christmas Reader - edited by C. Kelly-Gangi
Taylor Caldwell is the first contributor in this collection. Her personal Christmas memory
reminds all readers that none of us are ever completely alone. God is aware of us. Other stories include two of my favorites "Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus" by F.P. Church and "Christmas Day in the Morning" by Pearl S. Buck. Grade: A-

GLASS ANGELS - S. HILL
Tilly and her mom live in a small and cramped attic apartment.  Tilly's mom is a seamstress but finances are always limited.  One of their neighbors shares her beautiful Christmas decorations, including some glass angels, with Tilly.  Tilly has high expectations for Christmas but just like glass angels, expectations are fragile.  Grade: B
 
GOLDEN RING - J. SNYDER
Some gifts hold more meaning than other gifts. John Snyder's grandmother has treasured a
golden ring for these past eighty years. During the Christmas season 1918, Anna gave her golden ring to a family in need. This ring was her most treasured possession. She felt good about her charity but she also felt sad about the loss of this ring. Yet circumstances, and a loving father, bring happiness to Anna's life. This beautiful biographical novel reminds the reader of Christian love and the true meaning of Christmas. Grade: A

GRANDFATHER'S CHRISTMAS TREE - K. STRAND
In 1886 a young couple decide to move out into the Colorado wilderness. They find the right
spot, clear the land, build a cabin and plant crops. Their cabin stands in the shadows of several spruce trees. During a severe winter, the husband is forced to cut down all but one of the spruce trees for the last tree houses a family of geese. The young family needs the wood of this last tree to survive. What will happen? What lesson may be taught? Grade: B

GUIDEPOSTS FOR THE SPIRIT: Christmas Stories of Faith - EDITED
Christmas cheer, helping strangers and starting new yuletide traditions are all themes in this
collection of stories. Some stories are fictional and other stories come from the personal experiences of the authors. Grade: A-

HALLELUJAH - W. NICKOLA-LISA
Simple words and simple, but richly colored, illustrations make this story of the birth of a black Christ child appealing to children.  unfortunately, this book didn't appeal to me.  Grade: F
 
HARRIET AND GEORGE'S CHRISTMAS TREAT - N. CARLSON
Harriet and George dreaded Ms. Hoozits fruitcake last year. This year they hide every time they
see Ms. Hoozit who is giving out treats. Is this treat another fruitcake? This brightly colored book
unfortunately didn't have much of a story and therefore did not appeal to me. Grade: D

HO HO HO, HA HA HA - K. HALL & L. EISENBERG
Your young kids will love these knock-knock jokes. Adults may moan and groan at these jokes.
The illustrations are quirky and funny. Your young kids will laugh and enjoy exploring this book.
Grade: B-

HOLLY CHRISTMAS - M. BROWN
It's a plane, it's a bird; no, it's a kitchen table! The Holly's kitchen table went flying when a
wind gust tore it free from the tightly packed moving trailer. But Pop didn't stop. That is just the
beginning of the Holly's adventures when they move to Provo in 1954. Their next door neighbor's
children are hellions and soon the Holly kids and the Chester kids are at war. Neighborly harmony
does not exist. A forced date between the oldest children of both families is quite trying for both.
However, before the book ends, M. Brown teaches the reader about forgiveness and acceptance.
Grade: B-

HOME FOR CHRISTMAS - A. STANSFIELD
Allison is unhappy. It's the holiday season and Allison would like to go home to be with her
family in Australia. But after much prayer, she knows that she needs to stay in Utah. Allison would also like to find companionship and love but she has been unsuccessful so far. There is a secret that Allison is hiding. Why does she have to stay in Utah for the holiday? Will Allison ever find complete happiness? This is the first novel that I've read by A. Stansfield. The story was entertaining but rather predictable. Grade: B-

HOUSEFUL OF CHRISTMAS - B. JOOSSE
Every year, Granny works hard to bake cookies and decorate her home for the enjoyment of her
family during the holidays. This year, the whole family has to sleep at Granny's home because of a winter storm. Family chaos reigns but so does family unity and love. Grade: C+

HOW MURRAY SAVED CHRISTMAS - M. REISS
A new toy, a Jack-in-the-Boxer, knocks out Santa. Who will deliver the gifts now? How about
Murray Kleiner, the deli owner. Santa's suit is big on Murray but he accepts the challenge of filling Santas responsibilities. Murray's experiences at the first few homes are quite disastrous, but there is hope. Murray saves the day. M. Reiss used to write for the Simpsons. His quirky verses are a hoot. D. Catrow's pictures add to the fun factor of this book. Read How Murray Saved Christmas out-loud on Christmas morning and be prepared for the guffaws. Grade: A-

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS - DR. SEUSS
The Grinch goes to Whoville to steal all the presents and trappings of Christmas because his
heart was two sizes too small. He believed that Christmas came from the store but he learns that this isn't so. All the Who in Whoville are still celebrating Christmas. When the Grinch sees this, his small heart grew three sizes that day! Grade: B+

HOW THE REINDEER GOT THEIR ANTLERS - G. MCCAUGHREAN
After all the animals were created, they received their crowns. For example, the lion received a
wreath of fur. However, the reindeer received antlers and were shocked by their appearance. They ran away to the coldest region on the earth. This is where Santa Claus found them when he needed help. The reindeer help Santa and he rewards them in a special way. Grade: C-

HOW TO BE SANTA CLAUS - N. KELSH
Santa Claus is a product of the heart. This primer on becoming Santa Claus answers all the
questions a prospective Santa may have. Example: How to eat all the cookies and how to laugh. If you ever plan to masquerade as Santa, read this book. Grade: C+

HUGLY'S CHRISTMAS - T. ARNOLD
Hugly and his friends live in the monster world just below your bed. They like to visit the human
world. On his last visit on Christmas Eve, Hugly lost his star crystal. When he goes to retrieve it, he meets Santa Claus. This was a cute story. Grade: C

IF YOU TAKE A MOUSE TO THE MOVIES - L. NUMEROFF
Numeroff has created another book in her series of circled action books. The first action leads
to a second action and so forth until you return to the original action. If you take a mouse to the
movies, he'll ask you for some popcorn. Then he'll want to string the popcorn on a Christmas tree and so forth. Grade: C

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: True Stories for the Season - EDITED
This is a delightfully uplifting collection of true Christmas stories involving members of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. These stories take the reader around the world and
brighten the reader's heart with their faith affirming testimonies. Grade: A

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS - T. KINKADE
Beautiful Kinkade paintings are interspersed with verse and thoughts from works of literature in
this holiday book. Charles Dickens and George Eliot are just two of the authors quoted. Grade: B-

IN SHEPHERD'S FIELD - L. MOURITSEN
Impossible last minute errands, crowded malls and road rage all add to Jeffrey Logan's foul mood
this Christmas season. Jeff's wife has ordered him to find the most popular children's toy, Lottie the lamb, for their son. At the end of this miserable day, Jeff finds himself in a snowy field looking for his car keys. How did he get there and who is the mysterious shepherd Jeff meets? Then Jeff's day starts over and he has the chance to make amends. Will Jeff gain the Christmas spirit and who is the stranger he befriends? Grade: B+

IN THE DAYS OF THE ANGELS - W. WANGERIN
W. Wangerin uses his skills gained as a preacher in sharing these holiday stories through lyrical
prose. My favorite was "The Manger Is Empty." Grade: B+

I have no patience for any of the I Spy books. However, I believe that this title will keep
children safely occupied for some time. Grade: C

JACOB MARLEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL - T. MULA
"SCROOGE? I have to redeem 0ld Scrooge? The one man I knew who was worse than I was?"
This fun companion volume to Dickens' Christmas Carol shows us how Jacob Marley, in order to redeem his own soul, tries to influence Scrooge. Is there hope for Scrooge? Will Jacob Marley
succeed? Read the book. Grade A

JACOB'S GIFT - M. LUCADO

has challenged Jacob and others to create their best work to see who of them would be allowed to work on the new synagogue. Jacob's project is nearly finished when he hears about a baby born in a barn. This Holy Child needs a place to sleep and Jacob's project is the proper gift. Jacob received a gift from God and shares this gift with others. Grade: B+

JINGLE BELLS, HOMEWORK SMELLS - D. DeGROAT
Gilbert loves Christmas but he doesn't like doing his homework. During the busy weekend; filled
with ice skating, cookie baking and Christmas tree shopping; Gilbert forgets all about his homework. Monday morning arrives and Gilbert frantically realizes that he hasn't done his homework. So what is more important, doing your homework or enjoying holiday activities? Grade: C

JOLLY OLD SANTA CLAUS - P. PINGRY
This board book, filled with Victorian paintings, follows Mrs. Claus, the elves and Santa Claus
during their Christmas preparations and other activities. Good book for the littlest ones. Grade: B-
 
KING OF KINGS - S. HILL
Mr. Hegarty has been a widower for many years and Christmas is always a lonely time for him.  During the night before Christmas Day, Mr. Hegarty is awakened by a crying baby.  He gets up and finds a baby in a box on the doorstep of an abandoned church.  Mr. Hegarty takes the child to the hospital where the staff place this baby boy in the "Christmas" crib.  Grade: B-

LAST CHIMNEY OF CHRISTMAS - L. HIGH
Nicholas, the orphan, assists the master sweep in his work. After Nicholas finishes the last
chimney on Christmas Eve, he receives two gifts from the homeowner, a warm red coat and a glass globe. Nicholas is also told to pass the kindness on. Years later, Nicholas is an adult and decides to bring gifts to the many children in his town. Of course, he delivers these gifts through the chimneys.  Grade: C+

LAST STRAW - F.H. THURY
Hoshmakaka is an old and proud camel. His latest journey will have him following a bright star.
This stubborn camel claims that he can carry all the gifts, not just the gifts from the three wise men but also additional gifts delivered by people during the journey. Finally, a child offers just one piece of straw as a gift. The burden is too great until Hoshmakaka meets the baby king. Interesting for the young ones, perhaps thought provoking for the adults. Grade: C

LEGEND OF THE CANDY CANE - L. WALBURG
A stranger rides into town on a miserable November night and decides to open one of the
deserted stores. The town folks hear the hammering and sawing. Everybody wonders what this stranger does. The mayor hopes that this stranger is a doctor, the women hope that he is a tailor and the farmers hope that he is a trader. Nobody has asked the children what they hope this stranger represents. One day, Lucy stops at the store and asks if she can help. She soon finds out that the stranger, Mr. Sonneman, is opening a candy store. This fulfills the wishes of all the towns children. Mr. Sonneman introduces Lucy to a new type of candy, a candy cane, and tells her the legend of the candy cane. The J shape of the candy cane represents Jesus; turned upside down, the candy cane looks like a staff, such as a shepherd's staff. The red and white stripes also have religious significance. I will always remember this delightful story whenever I enjoy a candy cane during the holidays. Grade: B+

LEGEND OF THE CHRISTMAS ROSE - W. HOOKS
Little Dorothy is only nine years old. Her older brothers tend the familys sheep. One night, the
brothers rush home to report about their visit from an angel. They leave for Bethlehem to honor the king. Dorothy stealthily follows and then remembers that she doesn't have a gift for the child. Her anguished cries reach up to heaven and an angel scatters white flowers on the nearby field. Dorothy gathers some of these flowers and presents them to the Christ child. These flowers then became known as Christmas roses. Grade: C+

LEGEND OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE - R. OSBORNE
A wise Christmas tree merchant shares the legacy about the origin of the Christmas tree. Monk
Boniface first used an evergreen tree to illustrate the three members of the godhead. Other Europeans added apples and ornaments to remind them of Biblical stories. Martin Luther added candles. With this book, families can always remember the sacred symbols of the Christmas tree. Grade: B+

LEGEND OF THE POINSETTIA - retold by T. DEPAOLA
Lucida's small village nestles in the mountains of Mexico. Every Christmas, the village holds a
pageant and all villagers participate. Lucida's mother has been asked to weave a new blanket for the Christ child. Unfortunately, the mother falls ill and can't complete the blanket. Lucida attempts the weaving, albeit, unsuccessfully. Instead of a blanket, Lucida gathers the local green weeds and offers an arrangement of them. Within minutes, the weeds bloom and become the beautiful poinsettia.  Grade: B

LETTERS FROM FATHER CHRISTMAS - J.R.R. TOLKIEN
I'm a fan of Tolkien's Hobbit series and I was pleasantly surprised by this collection of Christmas
letters J.R.R. Tolkien wrote to his children over a 20+ year period. His fertile imagination enlightens the reader about life at the North Pole. Tolkien's drawings and paintings add to the enjoyment of this book. Grade: B

LIFE AND ADVENTURE OF SANTA CLAUS - L. FRANK BAUM
This twist on the life of Santa Claus is more entertaining than the more traditional beliefs. In
Baum's world, Santa was a human baby boy left behind near the Forest of Burzee. A wood nymph rears the child and eventually Claus becomes an adult and begins to carve toys for the children in the surrounding villages. The immortals who have been protecting Claus even grant him immortality and he continues with his quest to serve the children of the world. Grade: B+

LIFE'S LITTLE TREASURY BOOK OF CHRISTMAS TRADITION - H.J. BROWN
I enjoyed this brief collection of Christmas thoughts and ideas. "Never miss an opportunity to
shake hands with Santa Clause" is just one of the ideas presented in this book. H. Brown also invites the reader to start new Christmas traditions. Grade: A-

LITTLE ANGEL - G. McCAUGHREAN
Micah and other shepherds are watching their sheep when the angels arrive heralding the Christ
child's birth. All the shepherds leave and Micah is left to tend the sheep alone. He hears some cries for help and finds a little angel stuck in a tree. Micah helps the angel and together they search for Micah's sheep which ran away. Eventually, Micah and the angel arrive in Bethlehem and pay homage to the baby Jesus. Grade: C

LITTLE BOOK OF CHRISTMAS JOYS - H.&R. BROWN AND K. PEEL
This little book is filled with holiday recipes and hundreds of Christmas thoughts. My favorites
include #60-Never write the word Christmas as Xmas and #197-Refuse to let heavy traffic and long lines dampen your Christmas spirit. Grade: B-

LITTLE CRITTER'S CHRISTMAS BOOK - M. MAYER
Snowball fights, sledding, testing toys and wrapping gifts are a few of the Little Critter's
Christmas activities. Of course, Little Critter also has some misadventures. Mayer fans will like this book. Grade: C

LITTLE ELLIE CLAUS - J. MANOS
It is 1933 and newlyweds Peter and Lucy Thompson have just arrived in Manhattan. Peter will
be going to Columbia University to become a veterinarian. But the vet program has been canceled
because of the Depression. Peter finds a job after many weeks of fruitless searching. Lucy has a
surprise for Peter. She is pregnant. The first night of Peter's work, the same night that Lucy prepared a special dinner to tell Peter about her pregnancy, Peter is killed while rescuing a little boy. Lucy is devastated but continues with her life. She finds work wherever she can. But supporting herself and
little Ellie is just too much for Lucy. On the next Christmas Eve, Lucy leaves Ellie on the doorsteps of the local orphanage. It starts to snow and Ellie starts to cry. Nobody hears her cries except for Santa Claus who is making his deliveries. Santa rescues Ellie and transports her to the North Pole with him. Ellie grows up at the North Pole while Lucy copes with her life changing decision. Of course, there is a happy ending. I quite enjoyed this book. Grade: A-

LITTLE HOUSE CHRISTMAS - L.I. WILDER
This collection of literary vignettes taken from the Little House series is delightful. It is also a
good introduction to the Wilder books. Grade: B-

LITTLE LOST ANGEL - traditional
Angela, a little angel, loves to dance and often forgets what other responsibilities she has. When
the heavenly choir leaves for Earth to announce the divine birth, Angela is late and tries to catch up. Along the way, Angela follows a star to a manger. Grade: B-

LITTLE MISS SPIDER: A Christmas Wish - D. KIRK
Little Miss Spider only has one Christmas wish, to make a new friend. Asparagus Beetle is
lonely but then meets Little Miss Spider and they become friends. Kirk's marvelous illustrations and smart verse remind the reader about friendship and that wishes can come true. Grade: B-

LITTLE PORCUPINE'S CHRISTMAS - J. SLATE
Little Porcupine wants to try out for the Christmas play but all the other animals mock him.
They say that a prickly porcupine can only serve as a stage hand. But Little Porcupine's mom always says that he is the light of her life. Little Porcupine eventually does participate in the Christmas play showing us that there is a place for everybody. Grade: C

LITTLE RED BUCKETS - L. NELSON
This uplifting story of family and neighborly love reminds the readers to keep charity in their
hearts at all times, not just at Christmas. The story teaches that through charity we can overcome
personal and emotional pains. Grade: A-

LITTLEST ANGEL - C. TAZEWELL
A bumbling angel is looking for a gift for the Christ child. The angels only possession is an ugly
box of priced gifts. This box becomes a symbol for all mankind. Grade: A

LITTLEST TREE - C. TAZEWELL
Every Christmas tree on earth, no matter how humble, is duplicated in the Nativity Garden in
heaven. One tree will receive additional honors for the holidays. Tazewell teaches us to look beyond the obvious. Grade: B

LITTLE TREE - e.e. cumings
A brother and his sister find a small and scraggly Christmas tree. They take this tree home to
decorate and adore it. The story is simple but depending on which version you find, the pictures are pretty. Grade: C

MACARONI CHRISTMAS TREE - M. BROWN
Aunt Selby lives in a mansion but who owns it? The all-important will speculating ownership
has not been found. Several members of Selby's family are vying for ownership. A family dinner
becomes a family camp-out when everybody is snowed in. They start to decorate for Christmas and use the old ratty Christmas tree made out of macaroni. Humor and happenstance figure strongly in this final offering of Brown's Christmas books. The whole trilogy is worth reading and the ending is surprising. Grade: C

MADELINE'S CHRISTMAS - L. BEMELMAN
Miss Clavell and the eleven other girls are all in bed sick. Madeline cooks and cleans. She also
deals with a rug merchant who comes to the school. This merchant is a magician and soon everybody is feeling much better. Madeline teaches the reader to serve. Grade: C-

MAGIC TREE HOUSE: Christmas in Camelot - M.P. OSBORN
The Magic Tree House allows Jack and Annie to travel through time to experience the stories
portrayed in their books. Jack and Annie travel to a dour Camelot where all the joys of life and
Christmas have disappeared. The kids accept the quest to save Camelot. This is a cute and mythically informative story but it lacks a Christmas spirit. Grade: C

MCDUFF'S NEW FRIEND - R. WELLS
This board book brings a Christmas adventure to all the children who like McDuff. It's Christmas Eve and McDuff is restless. Something is bothering him. Finally, McDuff's owner investigates and finds Santa and his sleigh stuck in a snowbank. They help Santa and he can finish his Christmas rounds. Grade: C

MEMORY OF CHRISTMAS TEA - T. HEGG
In just a few words, Hegg reminds the reader to slow life down and remember what the holidays
are actually about. Hegg encourages the reader to visit with relatives and bask in the spirit of the
holiday and family. Grade: C+

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM BISCUIT - A. CAPUCILLI
Biscuit messes with the Christmas decorations and makes a nuisance of himself. The story is
cute and entertaining for the little kids but that is all. Grade: C-

MERRY CHRISTMAS MAISY - L. COUSINS
Lift-the-flap and pull-the-tab are integral ingredients in this simplistic story of Maisy's Christmas
activities. This is strictly a book for Maisy fans. Grade: D

MERRY CHRISTMAS MOM AND DAD - M. MAYER
Little Critter helps out with all the Christmas activities. His efforts don't always bring excellent results but his heart is in the effort. Grade: C

MERRY CHRISTMAS SPACE CASE - J. MARSHALL
Buddy McGee invited the thing from outer space, Space Case, for Christmas. But the thing
nearly forgets to come and Buddy nearly gets pounded by the neighborhood bullies. There was no
Christmas message in this book. Grade: D

MESSAGE FOR MICHAEL - S. WHITING
Nebraska during the Depression is no place for a widow to rear her two children, especially when
the son is deathly sick. The doctor tells Sarah to take her son Michael to a drier climate so she decides to sell all of her meager belongings and return to live with family members in Utah. But how can Sarah afford the trip and how can Michael survive the difficult journey? Only through the kindness of strangers. Michael even tells his mom that he has seen angels watching over them. And the angels have a message for Sarah that she will discover when she is ready for it. Message... teaches the reader about love, miracles and a caring Heavenly Father. Grade: B+

MIDNIGHT CAROL - P.K. DAVIS
Not every author is financially successful with every book he writes. This was the case for Charles Dickens. Shortly before publishing The Christmas Carol, Dickens found himself drastically short on money. He and his family were headed for the poorhouse. Then Dickens wrote his Christmas classic and through word of mouth this book became an overnight success. P. Davis nicely portrays the Dickensian era. She weaves a pleasantly written story about the creation of The Christmas Carol.  Grade: B

MIDNIGHT CLEAR - K. PATERSON
This collection of Christmas stories has its ups and downs. Sometimes it is difficult to appreciate
the Christmas message hidden in each story. However, Paterson writes well and has been honored for her works. One of the better stories is "Merit Badges."  Grade B-

MIRACLE OF CHRISTMAS - L. CHRISTENSEN
The holidays are always difficult for Rachel and Dave Andersen because they lost their young
daughter Emily a few years ago. This season, the Andersen family opens their home to a homeless
stranger by the name of Joshua. Joshua brings a special spirit into the Andersen home. When he goes to the local hospital to visit a friend, an orphaned and terminally ill little girl named Jennifer, Rachel accompanies him. Rachel learns the meaning of the miracle of Christmas through her interactions with Jennifer. Grade: B-

MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET - V. DAVIES
Doris Walker suffered through a heart-wrenching and emotionally draining divorce. From then
on she decided to be far more realistic about life than she had ever been before. Now she works for
Macy's department store and is in charge of the Christmas parade. This is just a job for Doris but when she needs a replacement Santa, her life begins to change. The person she hires to play Santa calls himself Kris Kringle. Is he the real Santa? He does have a way with the reindeer at the zoo. Most of us know this story and it is one of my favorite holiday movies. Grade: A-

MITFORD SNOWMEN - J. KARON
It is Christmas time in Mitford and fresh fallen snow has awakened childlike feelings within the
people of Mitford. Father Tim and other members of the community engage in a snowman building contest with delightful results. Christmas comradery is practiced by all. Karon creates the perfect small town atmosphere and makes her readers long for the simpler life. Grade: B-

MODERN MAGI - C.L. PEARSON
Bethlehem has always been a fantasy travel destination for Annabelle Perkins. She wants to
bring a gift to Christ's birthplace. Annabelle doesn't make much money as a waitress but she saves for her trip as best as she can. When she finally has the sum needed, unexpected events change her life.  Grade: B+

MOMENTS FOR CHRISTMAS - R. STRAND
This is a great collection of daily thoughts to enjoy for the holidays. Strand starts by telling the
reader about St. Nicholas. Then additional stories illustrate the beauty of Christmas and remind the reader that gifts of the spirit are more important than physical gifts. Grade: A-

MOUSE BEFORE CHRISTMAS - M. GARLAND
T'was the night before Christmas and this little mouse stayed awake to see Santa Claus. Santa
arrives and the mouse climbs into Santa's sack to become a stowaway. The little mouse enjoys the
worldwide sites and eventually Santa notices his guest. Santa returns the happy mouse to her home.  Grade: C+

MOUSE'S FIRST CHRISTMAS - L. THOMPSON
A small and nosy mouse discovers the sights, sounds and smells of CHristmas for the first time.  She even finds Santa Claus.  This is a good picture book for young kids but adults may find it boring.  Grade: C-
 
MR. WILLOWBYS CHRISTMAS TREE - R. BARRY
Mr. Willowby's tree this year is the biggest tree he has ever ordered. In fact, this beautiful tree is
too tall and Mr. W's butler cuts off the top of the tree. The upstairs maid needs a tree but also has to trim the top to make this smaller tree fit. The story continues in a similar fun manner. Grade: C

MRS. SANTA CLAUS - P. IVERS
Santa CLaus and the reindeer are sick.  Who is going to deliver all the Christmas gifts?  Well, Mrs. Santa Claus of course.  She finishes all the toys and then figures out how to deliver the toys by turning her bike into a flying bike.  She dresses as Santa and travels the world delivering the Christmas gifts.  On Christmas Day. Mrs. Claus and Santa Claus enjoy the holiday together.  Grade : C

MY MASTERS TOUCH - L.M. NELSON
This is the story of Meshak, a little burro born in the same manger as the holy baby. Meshak
and the boy child become friends and companions. The reader experiences many events of Christ's life through Meshak's eyes. Grade: B+

NEWBERY CHRISTMAS - EDITED
Once a year, one children's book receives the Newberry award. Newbery Christmas is an engaging
collection of fourteen stories written by Newbery award winning authors. My favorite was M. LEngle's "A Full House."  Grade: B

NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN UTAH - S. CARABINE
This Utah twist on the Christmas classic has Santa Claus visiting all the major geographical
tourist attractions in our beautiful state. Santa even meets Karl Malone and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. This book is a fun stocking stuffer. Grade: C+

NIGHT TREE - E. BUNTING
Mother, father, son and daughter have a precious Christmas tradition. They prepare apples,
tangerines, popcorn strings and sunflower seed balls to hang on a tree in the forest at the edge of town. The animals of the forest appreciate this unique gift. Christmas is about giving, not just to other people but to all of Gods creations. Grade: C

NIGHT WITHOUT DARKNESS: A Nephite Christmas Story - T. ROBINSON
Many years ago, Samuel the Prophet told of signs alerting the believers to the birth of Christ.
But the years have passed and the saints fear for their lives. Will the believers be burned for their beliefs or will the signs appear? This simplified telling of Christ's birth from the Book of Mormon will appeal to children and adults. Grade: A-

OLDEST ELF - J. STEVENSON
It's Christmas Eve and all the elves are busily working in Santa's noisy workshop.  However, Elwyn, the oldest elf, is working in his own shop in the basement.  Here Elwyn takes extra xare in preparing some of the more traditional toys for Christmas.  But Elwyn doesn't pay attention to the time and misses Santa's steigh.  Well, Elwyn isn't the only one left behind.  Blitzen also stayed behind, Santa's yearly trip had become too strenuous for Blitzen.  Elwyn and Blitzen decide to catch up with Santa and help deliver the Christmas gifts.  Grade: C
 
OLIVE, THE OTHER REINDEER - J. SEIBOLD
This children's story about a dog that thinks she is a reindeer is pretty lame for adults but may
have some appeal to kids. Grade: C-

ON CHRISTMAS EVE - M. BROWN
Beautiful illustrations depict the children's restless adventures and yearnings on Christmas Eve.
Will the children discover St. Nick? All readers are reminded of the wonders and awe of Christmas. Grade: B+

ONE CHRISTMAS DAWN - C.F. RAUSON
A young family lives in the mountains of southwest Virginia.  Dad has to walk miles to work.  This winter is setting new cold records.  Dad is laid off and finds a new job further away.  He must take the train to work and he can no longer come home every night.  Christmas is approaching and his younger daughter worries that her Dad may miss Christmas.  There wasn't much of a Christmas spirit in this picture book.  Grade: D
 
PAPAS ANGELS - W. PAXTON
A humdrum story of a dad who lost his wife and now doesn't want to celebrate Christmas. His
kids change his mind. Grade: C-

POLAR EXPRESS - C. VANALLSBERG
Do you remember the special sounds of Christmas? Can you hear the Christmas bell?
Polar
Express
is beautifully illustrated and reminds the reader about the wonders of Christmas. This book will make a pleasant gift for all ages. The reading of it could also become part of your yuletide traditions. Grade: B

POLITICALLY CORRECT HOLIDAY STORIES - J.F. GARNER
"T'was the night before solstice and all through the co-op. Not a creature was messing the calm
status quo up..." If you liked the previous politically correct books in the series, then don't miss this one. Additional stories include "Frosty the Persun of Snow"and "Rudolph the Nasally Empowered Reindeer." These stories are also great fun to read aloud.  Grade: B

POOH'S CHRISTMAS GIFTS - I. GAINES
This 1st reader book describes the Christmas activities of Pooh and his friends. Comradery,
friends and simple gifts all become part of their Christmas. Grade: C

PRECIOUS PRESENT - S. JOHNSON
Though not strictly a Christmas book, the Precious Present will make a good gift. It provides
much food for thought. What is the precious present? Is it a gift, or is it time?? Are both these
things the same? Find out for yourself.  Grade: B

QUIET LITTLE WOMAN - L.M. ALCOTT
This short rediscovered literary gem consists of three Christmas stories. Alcott presents her
Christmas themes in a simple style and her skill as a story teller is clearly evident. My favorite of the three stories is "The Orphanage." Also read the introduction, it explains the origin of these stories.  Grade: C+

RAPHAEL AND THE NOBLE TASK - C. SALTON
Raphael doesn't feel that his life is complete. He has been guarding the Cathedral for many years
and as a griffin, time has little meaning for him. But this stone creature believes that he must find a
noble task and successfully complete it. Raphael chooses to rescue and care for an orphaned baby
because the monks have no more food to share with the orphans. But how does a griffin care for a
baby? With the help of the mice and other creatures of the Cathedral. Grade: B-

REAL SANTA CLAUS - M. MAYER
The myth of Santa Claus started in Asia Minor around 200 A.D with the Bishop of Myra. He
was orphaned at an early age and grew up to become a spiritual leader. He performed miracles,
including raising three boys from the dead. 14th and 15th Century paintings illustrate this book.
Grade: B

REDNECK CHRISTMAS CAROL - J. YOW & T.S. HELTON
The title says it all and Charles Dickens is probably getting dizzy in his grave.  I liked this humorous adaptation but it isn't for everybody.  Grade: B-
 
RED RANGER CAME CALLING - B. BREATHED
This supposedly true story takes place at Christmas time 1939. A young boy only has one wish,
to be like Buck Tweed the Red Ranger and get a Red Ranger bicycle for Christmas. The boy,
Breathed's father, meets an old man who looks like Santa Claus and lives with elves. Well, its worth a try and the boy tells this man his wish for a Tweed bicycle. He gets his wish but...
Grade: B

REINDEER CHRISTMAS - M. PRICE
Santa and his chief elf Elwin have been delivering the children's gifts on foot for years. As they
add more children to their list, their job becomes increasingly more difficult. Elwin and the other elves build a sleigh for Santa but now Santa must find animals to pull the sleigh. All year long, every kind of animal, even including elephants, auditions for the job. None of them are qualified. Finally the reindeer approach Santa and the problem is solved. A cute story and nice pictures can make this book a yuletide favorite. Grade: B-

RETURN TO CHRISTMAS - C. HEIMERDINGER
This book is a variation of the prince and the pauper theme taking place at Christmas time.
The Holidays, a SLC family, lost one of their sons on Christmas day. They lost their Christmas spirit the same day. What can reverse this negative attitude of the Holidays? Throughout the story, the reader is reminded that life is full of surprises. Grade: B+

ROCKING HORSE CHRISTMAS - M.P. OSBORN
A young boy receives a rocking horse for Christmas. This horse takes him on many adventures
including being a cowboy, a knight and going on safari. As the boy grows, his interests change and the rocking horse is forgotten. Eventually, this toy finds itself stored in the attic. Of course, there is a happy ending. Grade: B-

ROVER SAVES CHRISTMAS - R. DOYLE
R. Doyle first surprised the readers of children's books with his novel The Giggler Treatment, a
lunatic and entertaining story. Now Doyle has returned with a Christmas book. Rudolph, the famous nasally blessed reindeer, is sick. Santa Claus is in a panic. Who can lead the sleigh during its worldwide journey? Rover, the dog from Giggler! Rover accepts this yuletide challenge. His friends; Kayla, Jimmy and Robbie Mack, also join the tour. Will all the gifts be delivered in time? Doyle's irreverent and in-your-face style made me laugh. Senseless commentaries and sidebars add to the story. His writing reminded me of the styles of Breathed and Snicket.  Grade: B

RUGRATS NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS - D. LEWMAN
Little Tommy can't sleep on Chritmas Eve. He wakes up when Santa Claus arrives. The other
children also wake up and enjoy the night before Christmas. Unfortunately, this adulterated version of a Christmas classic holds no appeal for me. Grade: F

SANTA CALLS - W. JOYCE
Art Aimesworth is an orphan, inventor, adventurer and crime fighter; he also hasn't been very
nice to his sister lately. Christmas 1908, a mysterious box arrives for Art. The box is from Santa
Claus and contains a Yuletide Flyer. Art, his sister Esther and their friend Spaulding all travel to the North Pole to visit Santa and deal with the Dark Elves. At the end of their adventure, Art still doesn't know why Santa called. The beautiful illustrations, with muted colors, invite exploration and discovery. Grade: B

SANTA'S ARK - C. WRIGHT
It's Christmas Eve at the NOrth Ploe and Santa is ready to leave on his worldwide trip.  One little reindeer, too small to help pull the sleigh, climbs into the sleigh and becomes a stowaway.  At every stop, additional animals join the stowaway.  Santa begins to wonder why the sleigh feels heavier when there are hardly any gifts left to be delivered.  Santa discovers his stowaways and brings them all back to the North Pole for a visit.  Grade: C-

This is a fun collection of twelve little Christmas board books, perfect for little hands and young
readers. Grade: B-

SANTA'S NEW SUIT - L. RADER
Santa has a closet full of red suits, some stained and some torn, and he wants to buy a new suit
for this holiday. He goes shopping and tries on several suits before finding one that he likes. However, the elves, the reindeer and the children at the department store all agree that Santa just doesn't look like Santa without his red suit. Santa relents and wears a new red suit for Christmas. This story may make you laugh but there wasn't a Christmas message. Grade: C-

SANTA'S SNOW CAT - S. STAINTON
Snow Cat, with her beautiful white hair and brilliantly green eyes, is Santa's favorite pet. On
Christmas Eve, Snow Cat hides in the Santa's sleigh. She is curious about all the sights but
accidentally falls out of the sleigh while Santa is flying over New York. Santa lands on the tallest
building and starts searching for Snow Cat. Eventually, he finds her and all is well. This cute story is nicely illustrated and portrays the Christmas spirit. Grade: B-

SANTA'S TOYS - S. WILLIAMS & T. GILL
This is a pull-the-tab picture book depicting Santa playing with the toys on Christmas Eve. He
almost seems to enjoy himself and almost forgets about the rest of his deliveries. Unfortunately, the tabs are fragile and can tear quickly. Grade: C-

SANTA'S TOY SHOP - M. PETERSON (Disney)
M. Peterson paints pictures of all the activities going on at the North Pole year-round.  We see the elves and Mrs. Claus baking cookies and we see Santa Claus supervising the toy rpoduction.  This book is a fun way for little hcildren to picture Santa's toy shop.  Grade: C+
 
SANTA'S TWIN - D. KOONTZ
Santa has been mugged. His twin brother tied up Santa and has hidden him in the dark cellar
under the Pole. Now the evil twin is visiting homes, destroying gifts and making a mess. Charlotte and Emily wake up and confront the depraved Santa. Will Christmas be saved? I quite enjoyed this demented and twisted yuletide tale. Every picture holds a surprise. Grade: B+

SANTA VISITS THE BIG BLUE HOUSE - K. FOXX
On Christmas Eve, Bear and his friends are busy baking cookies and wrapping gifts. They are all
excitedly waiting for Santa's visit. Bear takes care of his friends and endures their restlessness. Little tykes who enjoy Bear and his friends will also enjoy this book, others won't. Grade: C-

SECRET SANTA - A. POELMAN
Hendrik and Sarah van Sloten don't know how to provide Christmas for their children this year,
1933. The Great Depression has left many families without any hope of a happy holiday. Hendrik has been trying to earn money as a manual laborer but there just isn't enough money to even pay the bills, much less pay for presents. The van Sloten's oldest son convinces his parents to allow him to play Santa for their family. Of course, sometimes there can be more than one secret Santa. Grade: B+

SEVEN STORIES OF CHRISTMAS LOVE - L. BUSCAGLIA
This collection of personal stories from Leo Buscaglia's life reminds the reader to find the
spirituality of the holiday and to appreciate all of life's experiences. Just reading about the Buscaglia family inviting their new Jewish neighbors for Christmas makes this book worth reading. Grade: B

SHEPHERD - F. FORSYTH
On Christmas Eve, a young RAF pilot on his way home for the holidays finds himself in trouble.
His compass and radio are kaput and thick ground fog inhibits his orientation. Also, his fuel is
running low. Luckily, another pilot becomes his shepherd and leads him home, but there is a surprise.  Grade: B

SHEPHERD BOY - K. LEWIS
Lames wants to grow up to become a shepherd like his father.  James helps and watches the feeding and shearing of the family's sheep.  The following Christmas James receives the first gifts to fulfill his dreams.  Grade: D
 
SHEPHERDS, WHY THIS JUBILEE? - JEFFREY R. HOLLAND
Elder Holland presents his thoughts about the sacred holiday in three inspirational essays.
Through his words, the reader is reminded that Christmas doesn't come from a store, that the beautiful songs of the season can lift the heart and that Christmas is also a time of finding comfort.
Grade: A-

SHOE BOX - F. RIVERS
Mary and David Holmes receive Timmy O'Neil in their home to be his foster parents. Timmy's
mom works but his dad is in jail. Timmy is quite shy. He always carries a shoe box with him. When anybody asks him what is in the box he says: "Just things." Timmy takes part in the church Christmas pageant as one of the wise men. His gift to the Christ child is the best gift Timmy has to offer.  Grade: B

SISTER BISHOP'S CHRISTMAS MIRACLE - J. BAADSGAARD
Brother Willey has just been called to become the bishop of his ward. His wife LaRue isn't
thrilled with this new calling but she supports her husband. By the way, LaRue is due to deliver their ninth child in January. Being the Bishop's wife isn't easy and LaRue's life gets jostled even more when she is asked to prepare the ward's Christmas play. This Christmas play will never be forgotten by anybody in the ward or even in their community. Grade: A-

SKIPPING CHRISTMAS - J. GRISHAM
Last year's Christmas cost the Kranks $ 6000 and they have little to show for all that money.
Luther Krank and his wife Nora have just taken their daughter to the airport. She will be in Peru
during the holidays. Since it will be just Luther and Nora for Christmas, Luther decides to skip
Christmas this year and instead leave on a cruise on Christmas day. Luther's neighbors don't react well to the Krank's lack of home decorations. In fact, their street loses the neighborhood decorating contest. No gifts, no tree, no Christmas cards and no party all make Nora uncomfortable but she supports Luther's quest to skip Christmas. But of course, even best laid plans can go awry. Grisham's first foray into Christmas writing is highly entertaining, makes for fun reading and does carry a yuletide message.  Grade: B+

This delightful collection of pop-ups depicting holiday stories will tickle the fancy of most tykes
in your life. Grade: C+

SNOWIE ROLIE - W. JOYCE
One day, when the sun temporarily burned out, it snowed in Olie's world. Olie and his sister
build Mr. Snowie but when the sun started to shine again they didn't know what to do. Finally Olie and his sister jetted of to Chillsville to introduce Mr. Snowie to Klanky Klaus. I enjoyed the
illustrations of this story. Grade: B-

SNOWMAN JUST NAMED BOB - M. MOULTON
It's Thanksgiving night and it's snowing. The children create a snowman from the pure white
snow. This wintry creation becomes their friend. This book teaches about trust and friendship but
didn't appeal to me. Grade: D

SPECIAL GUEST - D.&L. ALLEN
A family, whose daughter has been in a coma since last Christmas, invites a kindly stranger to
join them for the holidays. Who is Zachary, what does he do, and how does he affect this family?
These are the ingredients of a good Christmas tale. Grade: A-

SPOT'S FIRST CHRISTMAS - E. HILL
The youngest members of your family will find fun in lifting the flaps and discovering Spot's
surprises. Grade: C

STAR BRIGHT - A. GREELEY
A young lady from Russia brings peace and harmony to the turmoil of her friend's dysfunctional
family. There still is the usual holiday family chaos but Christmas finally becomes a time of peace and joy. Grade: C

STARRY, STARRY NIGHT - LURLENE McDANIEL
In three short stories, McDaniel presents the reader with teenagers who have to cope with a death
in their family, doing a good deed and accepting family responsibilities. The stories are well written and each teaches a moral. Grade: B

STORY OF SANTA CLAUS - SCRIBBLER ELF
Scribbler Elf, the official scribe for Santa Claus and the North Pole, compiled this informative biographical sketch of Santa Claus and life at the North Pole.  It was fun to learn that Santa used to be a toy maker in Amsterdam.  The beautiful illustrations and delightful story make this book a holiday favorite.  Grade: B+
 
STORY OF THE OTHER WISE MAN - H. VANDYKE
Artaban may be late for the birth of the Savior, but Artaban follows the Savior's teachings.
During his travels, Artaban saves a traveler, a child, and a woman. He cared for the least of these.
Grade: A

STRANGER FOR CHRISTMAS - C.L. PEARSON
The mom in this story has always taught her children to help others in need. Now she resides in
a rest home. On a dare from a neighbor, she calls each of her children and asks them to invite a stranger into their home for the holidays. Each child declines. Their mom is very disappointed and discouraged. Her children have let her down. But the Christmas season always holds surprises. Grade: A-

STRANGER IN THE WOODS - C. SAMS & J. STOICK
Artistic photos of a winter landscape accompany this story of the forest animals discovering a
stranger in their midst. Who is this stranger? Is he a friend to the animals? Children will enjoy the
pictures and story. Grade: C

TALE OF THE THREE TREES - A. HUNT
Three little trees on a mountain top are talking about what they want to be when they grow up.
The first tree declares: "I want to hold a treasure." The second tree declares: "I want to become a strong sailing ship." The third tree declares: "I don't want to grow up. I want to grow tall and have people raising their eyes to heaven as they look at me." Each tree receives his wish but not in the way expected.   Grade: A-

TARNISHED ANGEL - D.J. HAWKES
Hazen Parker loves his extended family even though he never got married. Hazen loves to help
people anonymously. When he learns that his niece Lynda is homeless, he finds Lynda and her children and moves them to his ranch in Idaho. On Christmas Eve, Hazen tells his family how he received the tarnished angel ornament adorning their Christmas tree. Hazen's inspirational story is a pleasure to read. Grade: B+

TEACHER'S NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS - S. CARABINE
Santa Claus has lost his list of children who have been good and who have been bad. But he
knows that he can ask the teachers of the children to tell him who has been good or who has been bad. This is a fun twist on the traditional Night Before Christmas. Grade: C+

THANK YOU, SANTA - M. WILD
After the last Christmas, Samantha wrote a thank-you letter to Santa Claus.  Now she and he are pen pals.  She lives in Australia and Santa lives at the North Pole.  Samantha tells Santa all about her life in her monthly letters.  Santa in return writes about happenings at the North Pole.  This is a cutesy story that children should enjoy.  Grade: C+
 
THAT SPECIAL STARRY NIGHT - J. CARNEHL
In this colorful picture book, each page is divided. In the smaller section, a father tells the
Christmas story. In the larger section, snowmen act out the sacred story. Cute presentation but it
lacked a Christmas spirit in my opinion. Grade: C

THEY FOLLOWED A BRIGHT STAR - U. WENSELL
The shepherds followed the angel's call to go to Bethlehem.  On their way there, they encountered a man protecting a well.  They tell him the good news but he says that he must stay to protect the well.  The shepherds share the same news with a farmer plowing his field.  He says that this baby will need bread to eat at some time.  The story continues with the shepherds also passing by a fisherman and a wine merchant.  This story taught that not everybody will serve the Christ child at the same time, some people will serve at a later time.  Grade: B-

Grandma LeNay has lived an exciting life and she shares her experiences with her granddaughter.
Through LeNay's memories, the reader is taught about sacrifice, true love and faith. Three Gifts... is a well written and enjoyable novel. Grade: B

TO CHRISTMAS WITH LOVE - S. WHITING
This is a mixed collection of Christmas poems. Some poems are funny, some just ordinary and
several are uplifting. My favorite is "Christmas Peace."  Grade: B

TOOT & PUDDLE: I'll Be Home For Christmas - H. HOBBIE
Toot is traveling home for Christmas to be with his friend Puddle. But a winter storm delays
Toot and it looks as if he won't make it home in time for Christmas. But another winter traveler assists Toot. Unfortunately, this book didn't appeal to me. Grade: D

TREASURED STORIES OF CHRISTMAS - GUIDEPOST EDITORS
This is a beautiful collection of Christmas memories and stories. Norman Vincent Peale and
Pearl S. Buck are among the many contributors. This collection even includes the story about Wally who changed the spirit of his school's Christmas play when he boldly told Joseph "You can have my room!" Grade: B+

TREASURY OF CHRISTMAS MIRACLES - compiled by K. KINGSBURY
This is a nice collection of true and miraculous Christmas stories. My favorites include "Helping
Hand" and "Heavenly Hindrances." Each story reminds the reader that miracles still happen.
Grade: B+

TRUFFLE'S CHRISTMAS - A. CURREY
All the mice, except Truffle, have finished their letters to Santa. Truffle just can't decide on
what gift he wants, a Hula-Hoop or a blanket; the hoop wins out. But then, when all the little mice have to share a blanket that hardly covers them, Truffle decides to ask for a new blanket. He plans to stay awake and greet Santa. But even the best laid plans can fail. What will Santa bring to Truffle and his siblings? This is a cute story for kids. Grade: C

T'WAS THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS - M. SMITH
This is a cute lift-the-flap variation of the Christmas classic. A little mouse discovers that the
night before becomes the day after and Christmas decorations are packed away. The dried up Christmas tree is discarded and the house is cleaned up from the turmoil of the holidays. But Christmas will always be in your heart. Garde: B-

T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE - J.B. JENKINS
Tom Douten is a cynical Chicago Tribune reporter. He always writes stories about the negative
aspects of life in Chicago. Noella Wright is a perky and always positive professor of journalism. The two of them fall in love and all seems to be going well for them. They are even engaged to be married. But Noella has a secret. "I literally, really, actually-I don't know how else to put it, Tom-believe in Santa Claus." Tom the realist is shocked. The engagement is broken and both Tom and Noella separate to let their emotional wounds heal. Tom decides to investigate the myth of Santa Claus and his quest takes him to Germany. The commuter flight which Tom takes into the Black Forest crashes and Tom is the sole survivor. What happens to him next will change his beliefs.
I've read T'was the Night Before several times and enjoyed it each time. This novel has the
possibility of becoming an enduring holiday classic. Grade: A-

TWELVE DISASTERS OF CHRISTMAS - L. TURNER
The magical twelve days of Christmas are not so magical for Natalie Browning this year. She's
eight months pregnant and bigger than she ever was with any of her four previous children.
Additionally, Natalie has just been conned into directing the ward choir for the Christmas program and the only tenor just died. Natalie's mother-in-law also has come to visit for the holidays and
Natalie's husband has accepted a job transfer to Dirt Gulch, Mississippi. What else can darken the
holidays for Natalie? Lisa Turner captures the difficulties of Christmas and also brings the reader to a new appreciation of Christmas. Grade: B+

24 DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS - M. LENGLE
The Austin family has a fun holiday tradition. They do something special every day of
December. One day they may decorate their home, the next day they may bake cookies. This
Christmas season is different because Suzy, Vicky and John are awaiting the birth of their new sibling. Suzy plays the angel heralding Christ's birth and she doesn't want anything to interfere with the play. However, nature and the new baby both have different plans for the Austins. Grade: C+

UNDER A CHRISTMAS STAR - compiled by C. COOMBS
Several stories in this collection have become classics over the years. My favorites from this
collection include "Trouble at the Inn", "Christmas Day in the Morning" and "The Anniversay."
Grade: B+

UNEXPECTED CHRISTMAS GUEST - A. ELLIS
Conrad the Cobbler dreamed that he will be visited by the Lord. In preparation for this divine
visit, Conrad cleans up his shop and prepares a special meal. Then he waits, all day. Only a beggar, an old lady and a lost little girl come past Conrad's shop. That night, Conrad asks the Lord why He didn't come. But of course He did come. Grade: A-

WELCOME COMFORT - P. POLACCO
Being an orphan in a new school is difficult enough. But for a boy to be named Welcome
Comfort makes life even more challenging. Welcome is befriended by Quintin Hamp, the school
custodian, and Quintin becomes like family to Welcome. Unfortunately, Welcome can never visit with the Hamps on Christmas day because they always go up north. Welcome has a very vivid dream about Santa and almost believes that the dream is real. Was it? Does Quintin have a secret? This book teaches about acceptance and friendship. Grade: B-

WESTERN CHRISTMAS CAROL - T. ROULSTONE
It has been too long since David Clarke enjoyed the smile of a pretty woman. It is Christmas in
the 1890's and David's beloved wife died a few months ago. David and his daughter Jessie have been alone since then. Now David is ready to find a new wife. He desires to meet and court Lucy Devlin, but her brother-in-law adamantly opposes any courtship. Add a lost letter proclaiming a hidden treasure to this mix and you get a Western Christmas Carol. T. Roulstone attempted to emulate the Dickens classic but Roulstone's story lacks substance. Grade: C

WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS - EDITED
Your little ones will find this board book of holiday stories, illustrated with bright colors,
entertaining. My favorite was "Naughty Ivy."  Grade: C+

WHAT CHILD IS THIS? - C.B. COONEY
An orphaned girl is placed in a new foster home at Christmas time. All she wants for Christmas
is to have a new permanent family. Additional key points of this pleasant tale consist of a cynical head-of-household, a childless couple, a foster brother who is too familiar with the harsh realities of life, and the innocent faith of a little child.  Grade: A

WHEN ANGELS SING - T. PIPKIN
Michael Walker loved Christmas as a child. He looked up to his brother David and wanted to be
like him. Michael and David always enjoyed Christmas. Then one year, on Christmas Day, David is killed. From then on, Christmas is a torturous holiday for Michael. Many years have passed and Michael is married and has two children of his own. Tragedy again strikes during the holidays and
Michael is as forlorn as ever. What changes his attitude and resurrects his love for Christmas? Read the book. Grade: A-

WHEN CHRISTMAS COMES - B. GEBAUER
This collection of poems and short stories is fairly uplifting. One of my favorites was "Out of
the Storm." Grade: B

WHEN MOTHER WAS ELEVEN-FOOT-FOUR - J. CAMERY-HOGGATT
Josephine Hoggatt is short, only four-foot-eleven, but she is as tough as nails and often towers
over difficult people. It's Christmas 1963 and Josephine and her husband have their usual
disagreements about the secular aspects of Christmas. She loves the gifts and decorations and he
believes that Christmas has become too commercial. Jerry loves both his parents but circumstances soon tear the family apart. With this biographical novel, Jerry Hoggatt honors his mom and the memories of Christmas. Grade: C

WHERE IS CHRISTMAS JESSE BEAR? - N. WHITE
Jesse Bear tells the reader that Christmas is in all we do duirng the holidays.  He says: "I feel Christmas everywhere."  Grade: C
 
WHERE WAS MARY? - G. BLOSIL
Though not strictly a Christmas story, Where Was Mary? is a poetic retelling of the life of
Christ. Darin Ashby's pencil drawings add to the enjoyment of this poem. Grade: C+

WHO IS COMING TO OUR HOUSE? - J. SLATE
All the barn animals know that a special guest is coming so they clean and preen until their guest
arrives. Eventually, the Holy Family arrives at this humble barn. This board book helps the youngest kids understand the Christmas story. Grade: B-

WHO WAS BORN THIS SPECIAL DAY? - E. BUNTING
Soft focus illustrations complement this simple story.  All the barn animals ask who was born this special day and the answer, of course, is the Christ child.  Grade: C
 
WHY CHRISTMAS TREES AREN'T PERFECT - R.H. SCHNEIDER
Small Pine is an evergreen who wants to grow up to become the Queen's Christmas tree. All the
other evergreens tell Small Pine to guard against the damages caused by wild animals. But Small Pine has a large heart. He makes his branches and protective covering available to a rabbit and a wren in need. Small Pine even allows a starving fawn to feed on his soft needles. When the wise queen tours her forest to select her Christmas tree, she recognizes the sacrifice Small Pine made and selects Small Pine as the royal Christmas tree. Small Pine teaches the reader about Christian love. Grade: B+

WILD CHRISTMAS REINDEER - J. BRETT
Santa has asked Teeka to get the reindeer ready for Christmas. However, the reindeer aren't
cooperating and Teeka hasn't yet learned how to properly control the reindeer. Teeka finally
understands how to handle the reindeer and all is well. Brett's art work is beautiful. Grade: B-

WINNIE THE POOH'S HOLIDAY HUMMABLES - DISNEY
The youngest members of the family will enjoy the holiday activitites of Pooh and his friends.  Parents reading the book to their children will not get bored immediately.  Grade: C
 
WISE MAN IN THE CHECKERED SHIRT - M. DRAKE
Can you imagine a mall Santa Claus who doesn't like children? The idea nearly boggles the
mind. But Jerome, who is also an elementary school teacher, is such a person. He only works the
Santa job for the commission earned from the overpriced photographs. The managers of this mall also only worship the almighty dollar and have little Christmas spirit. Jerome watches two sisters steal the coins from the wish fountain. He voices his displeasure to the older sister but to no avail. The girls do look like they could use the money so Jerome watches them, talks to them and tries to learn more about them. As the mystery around these girls deepens, Jerome finds himself drawn to their plight. His attitude changes and he grows in Christmas spirit. At first, Wise Man...appears to be a Christmas farce. Then M. Drake subtly changes directions and creates a wonderful Christmas story with an ending worthy of Jeffrey Archer. Grade: A

WISH FOR WINGS THAT WORK - B. BREATHED
Opus the penguin only has one wish for Christmas. He wants to be able to fly. Will he get his
wish? This is a cute story by the creator of the Bloom County cartoon. Grade: B-

WITH LOVE AT CHRISTMAS - M. FOX
Mrs. Cavallaro loves Christmas.  She buys gifts for all her relatives, especially the grandchildren, and her friends.  Then she wraps all the presents and stores them in a wooden chest at the foot of her bed.  This holiday season, Mrs. Cavallaro hears about the African famine.  She takes the money she had planned to send to some grandsons and instead sends this money to a relief organization.  When Mrs. Cavallaro hears about a local family who won't have gifts for Christmas, she takes some of her family's gifts to the needy family.  Mrs. Cavallaro continues her gift giving and soon finds that hse has given away all of her family's gifts.  This saddens her, but she hopes that her family will understand.  During the night before Christmas, Mrs. Cavallaro wakes up to find a crying baby in her wooden chest.  the next morning, her family arrives for the holiday and...
This picture book is a good reminder about caring for others during the holidays.  Grade: B+
 
WITNESS - R. WESTALL
One of the temple cats is stolen in Egypt and finally delivered to a new master in Judea.  The cat escapes and is trying desperately trying to find a safe place in which she can give birth.  Her search leads her to a stable where she finds a man and a woman, the woman being pregnant.  The cat has her litter and the woman gives birth to a baby boy.  As the cat rests, shepherds and wise men come to worship the child.  Eventually, the man and the woman leave the stable to travel to Egypt and the cat with her kittens accompanies them.  Joseph is portrayed harshly in this picture book but the story puts a new twist on teh birth of the Christ child.  Grade: C
 
WOODCUTTERS CHRISTMAS - B. KESSLER
1st Avenue and 9th Street mark the corner which Vars from Vermont calls home for a couple of
weeks every December. Vars sells Christmas trees to the inhabitants of Manhattan. One year, Vars doesn't return to Vermont in time for Christmas Day. Instead, he stays in the city and then sees many of his trees discarded the day after Christmas. This nearly breaks his heart. He decides to collect the trees and return them to Vermont. During his activities he also has a chance encounter with a beggar woman. What will this meeting bring and will Vars continue to sell his trees? This short book is more of a romantic story than a Christmas story. Grade: C-
