BILLY BOXX'S X-MAS SALE - R. HARSHAW

Silver Springs is a small town but it has Billy Boxx's Appliance and Electronics store. The "xx" in Billy's name stand for "extra, extra low prices." In fact, Billy has successfully created an advertising campaign which capitalizes on the spelling of Christmas as X-mas. Most people have accepted Boxx's ads, except old lady Crabtree. Every year she would write a letter to Billy reminding him of his foolishness in taking "Christ" out of the holiday. But Mrs. Crabtree died during the year and Billy doesn't expect a letter from her this year. However, a letter does arrive and then so does Mrs. Crabtree's ghost to remind Billy of the symbols of Christmas. Filled with Yuletide poetry and stories, this fine collection begs to be read and savored in small servings. My favorites include "In this Moment" and "In China During Christmas." Grade: B+

Find snowmen, elves, reindeer, they're hiding from you." Readers can discover many surprises, including "Merry Christmas" in foreign languages, in these delightful pictures. Grade: B+

CHRISTMAS CROSS - M. LUCADO

A picture of Clearwater Lutheran Church leads the narrator of this story to return to his birth town of Clearwater, TX. The narrator admits that he and his wife have had a rough time in their marriage lately and that this short addition to a business trip may ease the tension, Christmas is just a few days away. But Clearwater holds a mystery. Our narrator doesn't know about his birth family since he was adopted. But answers often come in unusual ways. Eric Sanders is perfectly content with his life. His wife Leslie and children Billy and Michelle love him and all are happy living in a beautiful home in a small town. Just this morning, Eric shopped for special gifts for Leslie and the kids. Tonight, Leslie and the children went to choir practice while Eric stayed home to wrap the gifts he bought. Then a knock on the door brings devastating news; Leslie and kids were killed in a car accident. Christmas has lost its appeal for Eric and following the funeral, Eric calls a local charity to give them all the presents, decorations and even the tree. But Eric forgot the special gifts still lingering in the attic where he was wrapping them. He carefully evaluates who of his acquaintances would best benefit from each gift and then delivers the gifts covertly. Shortly after Christmas, Eric moves to a big city, and over the course of many years, becomes the head of his firm. He never remarries and he does not celebrate Christmas. But holiday nostalgia draws Eric back to his small town one year. He attends the Christmas program and discovers that his gifts created unique results. Christmas Gifts, Christmas Voices reminds the reader to take a second look at life and discover what really matters. Yes, misfortune will come at some time and parents may experience their worst nightmares but there is hope. Grade: A

CHRISTMAS IN CANAAN - K. ROGERS & D. DAVENPORT

The turbulent 1960's even touched tiny Canaan, TX. DJ Burton, white, and Rodney Freeman, black, are classmates, but not friends. As a result of one of their fights, Rodney and DJ are forced to live with each other's family for a couple of days. This unique punishment brings understanding and friendship to the boys. Rodney lives with his grandmother and when she dies, DJ's father invites Rodney to live with them. Times are tough financially for the Burtons and Christmas presents challenges. Civil liberties and personal feelings also stir up trouble in sleepy Canaan. This book started out well and should have been ended just after Christmas. Unfortunately, the authors decided to continue their story and included some "damns and hells" in the ensuing dialogues. The Lord's name is also taken in vain once. Grade: D

CHRISTMAS IN HARMONY - P. GULLEY

Harmony is a beautifully sleepy American town. Everybody knows everybody else, the local preachers of different faiths are friends and small town quirks abound. One church's Christmas festivities this year stir up troubles in a funny way. Touches of Americana ooze from the pages of this book but the Christmas message is lacking. Grade: C

CHRISTMAS IN MY HEART #11 - EDITED BY J. WHEELER

This year's, 2002, yuletide offering of short stories compiled by Joe Wheeler is quite enjoyable. Grade: B+

CHRISTMAS IN MY SOUL #3 - EDITED BY J. WHEELER

Winter in the country is quiet, from the soft fallen snow to the silence of the woods and animals. Christmas Jars by Jason F. Wright

"To the next person to hold my baby, she is yours now." Why would a mother ever have to write such fateful words? Because the woman in question has an abusive husband and couldn’t think of any better way of giving her child a more loving home. When Louise Jensen finds the infant, Louise is overwhelmed with love and awe. This baby will be coddled in Louise’s loving arms. Since no information regarding the baby is available, the courts eventually grant Louise custody of this baby girl which Louise names Hope. While growing up, Hope yearns to be a newspaper reporter. Well, Hope gets a job at a newspaper, writing classified ads and editing other writers’ works. Life seems to be flowing along nicely for Hope until one Christmas Eve when her comfort zone is shredded. Her apartment was broken into. But the despair of a ruined holiday, and loss of trust, is softened by the appearance of a jar filled with money. Hope does not know who provided this "Christmas Jar" or why. Her reporter’s curiosity aroused, Hope embarks on a journey of discovery. Over the years, several people have written to the editor stating that they too had received such mysterious money filled jars. Hope’s search brings her to the home of a family who practices the tradition of creating Christmas Jars. What happens next, creates the spirit of Christmas Jars. Wright’s book is filled with honorable characters, examples of loving family relations and the spirit of service. The book also invites readers to start their own Christmas Jar tradition. Grade: A-

The children at Irongate are told to obey the rules at all times and Rose tries to do so. Every Christmas, an older man in town delivers a box of oranges for the children. However, the Christmas message so prominent in Christmas Wish is not represented in this book. Grade: B+

CHRISTMAS STORIES FOR THE HEART - COMPILED BY A. GRAY

This elegant book of Yuletide stories is filled with heart-warming and faith-affirming stories. Taylor Caldwell recalls a Christmas when she was in her 20's and life had dealt her a few miserable cards. Paul Flucke's story "The Secret of the Gifts" creates a whole different aspect of the Christmas story. Some editions of this collection also include a holiday music CD which adds to the reader's enjoyment. Grade: A

CHRISTMAS TAPESTRY - P. POLACCO

The author of Welcome Comfort brings an oft told story to life in this picture book. A minister and his family have been transferred to a new parish. The church building needs much work and the children didn't really want to move. During the holiday season, frozen water melted and damaged the sacristy wall. To prepare for the Christmas service, the preacher and his son go in search of a picture or piece of cloth to cover the damage. They do find a beautiful, and large enough, piece of cloth to cover the damaged wall. An old lady, whom they invited to their home, sees the cloth and is flabbergasted. She made this tapestry in preparation for her marriage in the "old country" just before the Nazis destroyed her life. She and her future husband were forcefully separated and she believes that her lover died. A couple of days later, the plasterer comes to the church to inspect the damage and he also recognizes the tapestry. His beloved created it for their marriage before the Nazi terror started. Of course, love is eternal and the woman and the man reunite happily. Different versions of this story exist, but it always touches my heart. Grade: A-

The train is filled with unique characters including a nervous couple planning to get married on the train, a thief, a retired preacher and-surprise, surprise-Toms former lover. Add to this mix a movie producer, a fortune teller and mutable Mother Nature and you get this delightful lark of a Christmas story. Baldacci employs his writing skills in presenting the values and cheer of Christmas. Grade: A-

The snow was whiter, the old man as a young boy waited to hear the reindeer's hoofs on the roof, just as kids do still today, and Christmas wasn't much different from what it is today. Unfortunately, this wasn=t much of a Christmas book. Grade: D

Palmdale Middle School is your usual school with the requisite class clowns, in this case, Frankie and Devin. ONE SILENT NIGHT - J. WARNICK

Daniel Morgan is spending Christmas in a dangerous place far away from home. It is 1914 and he and his men are fighting the Germans. No official truce has been announced for the holiday but miracles can happen anywhere. On Christmas Eve, Daniel hears the sweet strains of "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht" wafting across no-mans-land, the frozen ground, littered with bodies, between the opposing trenches. The Germans even set up small Christmas trees, lit with flickering candles, along the edge of their trench. British soldiers start singing Christmas hymns and eventually, Daniel and a German soldier brave their fears and meet in no-mans-land. An unofficial truce ensues. British and German soldiers unite in worshiping the Christ Child and also take the time to bury and honor their fallen comrades. Though the truce ends at midnight Christmas Day, war has lost its meaning for these soldiers. This fictional account draws on historical records which document the impromptu truce happening at various points of the Western Front in the early part of WWI. Grade: A

The Paper Bag Christmas by Kevin Alan Milne

How would a white and worn paper bag become a symbol of Christmas? Let’s find out. Our story begins the day after Thanksgiving in 1980 when Mo and Aaron meet a most unusual Santa Claus at the local mall. This Santa won’t let children sit on his lap. What is the deal? When Mo and Aaron ask Santa, whose real name is Dr. Ringle, they learn that Dr. Ringle lost his legs during WW II. But the loss of his limbs didn’t keep Dr. Ringle from accomplishing his goals. He eventually earned his medical degree and now works as a pediatric oncologist at the local hospital. Dr. Ringle is a friend of the boys’ parents and needs the boys’ help in bringing Christmas to many of his patients.  Aaron and Mo soon find themselves dressed as elves accompanying Santa in his wheelchair while he visits with the often terminally ill children on the fifth floor of the hospital. Happiness and sadness, encouragement and disappointment reign on this floor. One particular girl named Katrina holds a special place in Santa’s heart. Katrina’s brain surgeries have left their unfortunate marks and Katrina feels that she is ugly. Therefore, Katrina hides her head inside a white paper bag and hides her feelings inside herself. Just how can Aaron and Mo help Katrina regain the joy and magic of Christmas?  Milne’s touching novel reminds readers of caring, friendship and sacrifice. How often do we get carried away by the gifts and hustle of Christmas activities and forget what Christmas is really all about? Read Paper Bag Christmas and rediscover the true meaning of Christmas.   Grade: A-

VISIONS OF SUGAR PLUMS - J. EVANOVICH

Although she locked her door and windows, Stephanie wakes up to find an unwelcome guest in her apartment. His name is Diesel, he is quite handsome, and he has a way with locks. Diesel also chides Stephanie for her lack of Christmas preparation. She doesn't even have a tree and she hasn't bought any gifts for her family yet and it is just a few days before Christmas. However, Steph's latest case does have a Yuletide flavor. She is trying to apprehend an old geezer named Sandy Claws. Steph's family appears to be even more dysfunctional during the holidays than at other times. The family Christmas tree looks like "it was grown near a nuclear plant" and Grandma Mazur has yet another boyfriend. Christmas in the Burg, with Diesel having his own agenda and Stephanie's libido doing flip-flops, creates a new definition of holiday delirium. Unfortunately, Visions... isn't much of a Christmas book but Plum fans will like this addition to the series. Grade: C-

YOUNG SANTA - D. GREENBURG

The early life of Santa Claus is revealed in this book. His parents were Sophie and Milton Claus and they thought that "Santa" sounded cute as a boys name. When Santa was three years old, his father relocated for his job to the North Pole. Here Santa learned to drive a sleigh. Santa also enjoyed wearing red clothing and eventually got a job in the towns small store listening to children telling him their Christmas wishes. Seeing a need, Santa decided to share his gifts and eventually continued this tradition yearly and became the modern day Santa Claus. Greenburgs book is imaginative but other authors, such as Frank Baum, have created more interesting histories of Santas youth. Grade: C-
